You can't trade away your first round pick on a rental winger right after trading away your number one center for pretend centers who are really also wingers when the're any good. If the Caps take that Backstrom deal, it's a rebuilding year, so they trade Carlson, and Holtby, to bring back young players, picks, and prospects, including a potential 1C. Then they draft another potential 1C with Montreal's lottery pick, and see which one comes through. If Drouin or Galchenyuk could play center, the Habs would be contenders.
