TML 2018-19 Roster Guess Post TDL

Description
Rather than move willy to Centre next season, this outlook would seek to be a power house during the single season that we have massive cap space before the Matthews/Marner contracts get added in. JvR is brought back assuming the Oshie contract is used as a model. Martin can likely be moved cheap on July 1, after the leafs pay his signing bonus so as to not retain salary. Thornton is kind of a place holder for the 3rd line Centre position. Stastny would be a target as well since I doubt Thornton leaves the west coast, however he probably searches for more term than a single season. Demers is a cheap middle ground option that I think could be acquired relatively cheap. Nielsen may be loosing value as a prospect soon but does have high upside. ARZ was also considering moving him prior to the TDL. With the cap increase and expiring contracts this would allow ARZ to trade him without retaining salary. Other defensive options I looked at were Trouba (likely gets a large contract and will cost too much to acquire), Hjalmarsson as a cheaper more short term alternative to Demers, and Tanev who I decided wouldn't be the best due to injury problems and high cost. This allows guys like Korshkov and Grundstrom to develop a year with the Marlies as is becoming tradition. Stajan is also a placeholder for a random insert depth option. Demers acquisition eliminates the need for Polak as well. Sparks could take the backup position as well and Pickard can be used as a trading asset as Ian Scott and Kasimir Kaskisuo become the new Marlies tandem.

Demers isn't good any more and you showed by not trading anything of value for him. leafs aren't signed JVR for cap reasons and just thought he will never sustain his play for the next seven or eight seasons

Only Thing I Would Change Is 6 Years For JVR, 8 For Willy. And To Anyone Saying Thornton Is Overpaid, Leafs Will Always Spend To Cap. So 1 Year Of Thornton For $7,000,000 Is Not “Dumb” Beacuse They Can Spend Recklessly, And He Wouldn’t Leave SJS For Anything Less

Demers has 5 Goals and 19 points with only 3 Assists on the Powerplay of which he is bottom 30 in the league in TOI. I think his production would see a major boost on an offensive team like Toronto. He is 3rd in TOI as well behind Goligoski and OEL who largely are ahead due to the PP time. He is a PKing RHD who is top 20 in the league among Defenders with at least 100 min PK TOI this season in terms of Corsi Against. Demers is good. I just don't think ARZ should keep him as they still have a lot of work to do rebuilding and Demers is 29 and they should trade him before his value drops. The leafs should target him because he is a huge upgrade on Polak, Hainsey and Zaitsev with the bonus of his contract expiring right around the time Liljigren's ELC expires and after at least one more year in the AHL I would expect him to put up numbers justifying a fair bit of cap. Nielsen has value, he is a player with a very high potential ceiling and size however is struggling to learn the defensive side of the game. He is 21 and a former 3rd round draft pick. He saw a lot of the power play time go to players like Dermott and Liljigren and even Marincin and Borgman got some time over him which is a big part in his production drop. I think he is a good grab along with a mid high draft pick (3rd round) to maybe see if he can bounce back production wise and if his defensive side can be improved. It's a good trade imo.

As for JvR. If he signs an Oshie type deal then yeah bring him back. That's what I used as a ball park figure for the deal I put on here, 8 years roughly $5.5-5.75 Mil. There is plenty of Cap room for it to work and still grab a defense man (Demers). The cap is going up to $80 Mil and the leafs also have Horton who can go onto LTIR. There is like $35 Mil in cap that can be manipulated next season. The following season if the moves I listed are made there will be roughly the same amount again. Enough to extend Matthews, Marner, Kappanen, Aaltonen and Gardiner.

Probably gets another year with the Marlies tbh. He's had a great first year but there is no rush for him. Develop what is up with the team right now (Dermott/Kappanen and likely Johnsson added to that as well) and create an environment for him to be insulated in when he is ready.
