Counting on the scouts -- pre-draft

Team: 2017-18 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2018
Published: May 1, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Habs' scouts can't build a future out of 10 picks in the top 62, there's a problem that reaches well beyond Marc Bergevin. Habs would have picks # 9, 11, 12, and three more in the 20s.

While it is assumed that with Weber going to the Islanders, they'll be able to keep JT, there are still a number of good UFA to sign this year. Habs should concentrate on John Carlson and either Jack Johnson or Jon Moore.

Ryan is a cap play. Just how eager is Ottawa to get rid of him? Anyway, if the need is there to toss in a middling prospect, sure.

That's what I thought. But now Dudley's gone, so who's going to listen?

So which trade(s) don't you like? Or is it that it puts too much heat on one draft?

My goodness if this happened I'd probably scream like a little school girl. None will happen however. IMO.

Most of these things are pipe dreams, but I think this makes sense for all concerned.

The Isles aren't going to get offered two better players this summer for non-roster players and picks. The way I saw it is that each of Weber and Max are worth a prospect, a first and a second. Maybe that's rich, but it's not lunacy.

The Rangers is the #3 and #34 for the #8 and two in the high 20s (or low 30s). Didn't seem to crazy, but maybe needs a little sweetener.

I have no idea why Bobby Ryan gets such a rough ride from Ottawa fans, but I'm happy to take him off their hands for a couple of year. Then either take some cap and trade him or just buy him out.

You know many teams that can take on 12M in cap like that? Especially when they need to give their captain a huge pay upgrade? Any Weber trade will involve salary coming back.

I did look at that, but yes, the Habs would probably be happy to take back some cap because they risk being sub-floor if they don't. But, the Islanders do have Kulemin, De Haan, Hickey, Halak and Chimera coming off the cap for a total of $14.5M. The cap will jump somewhere around $5M, so there's $19M, roughly. Tavares will go from $5.5M to $11Mx8, leaving about $13M. Weber takes up $8M and Max takes $4.5M. Find a home for Ladd and they're home free. But, going back to the top, I suspect the Habs would be fine taking back some salary since they won't have many expensive contracts for 3-4 years.
