Just curious how you're getting McAvoy, Heinen, donato, an Carlo signed the following season? Why is fitzgerald on the 2nd line over Heinen/deBrusk? Very odd lineup from a Bruins "diehard".

Also, is that even legal to trade a player only to re-acquire him retained? Even if that is, this is nothing more than NHL 18/19 ****. That wouldn't happen.

ajc - Ummm...why?

BreKel - The Bruins would have potentially 18-20M in cap space the following season. Of those players you listed, McAvoy is the only one to command a salary >5M/year. I'm not losing sleep over how we would re-sign Donato and Heinen lol. As for the lineup, I'm personally not a big fan of Heinen, but there's no reason he couldn't slot into the 2nd line RW. I just heard all year about how the poor thing can't play the right side so...Fitzgerald had a great year in Providence and a great career at BC. Looking forward to seeing him in the lineup next year.

And yes, that trade is 100% legal. You can't re-acquire a player whom you've already retained salary for, but there is nothing to say you can't trade a player away and then immediately reacquire him.

Yes! Tavares should be on the top line. And its interesting you bring up if thats legal because i was wondering the same amd even thinking a for several weeks what if a team did a trade like that and can they? This is good though. Any team with tavares is better with him.

McAvoy could easily earn 6-7M AAV on his next deal. Even being conservative, that 18-20M is going to go quick.

McAvoy = 6-7M
Heinen = 3.5-4.5M
donato = 2-3M
Carlo = 3-4M

16.5 - 18.5, and that's just the big names. Jf-Karlsson, fitzgerald, and Cehlarik. Obviously, rough numbers and who knows where they actually come in, but for sake of discussion, that money could go fast. On Heinen, i don't understand why so many Bruins fans don't like him? Yes, he ha a poor showing in the playoff, but he wouldn't be the first rookie to. That said, he is coming off a 47 point rookie season, heee. He was a top scoring rookie, espite playing a majority of the time on the 3rd line (with Nash and Backes). This was also with a decent stretch where he was cold. Also, I think you're confusing onato with Heinen on the winger comment. I on't eve ecall anyone or he, himself, saying he couldn't play the right side. I am with you on fitzgerald. I hope he gets a shot next season. I just don't expect him to jump Heinen or donato for a T6 role. I think he makes a niche as a 4th line player, at least to start.

Okay. Thank you for confirming. I do stand by my comment that it is something you woul see in a video game an that's petty much it. Has this eve been one in the NHL? I can't remember anything like that happening.

Those are reasonable estimates, although perhaps I might disagree with Heinen's contract out of all of those. But as you said, who knows where those numbers actually come in? The original point of this exercise was trying to fit John Tavares into the roster at a 10M/year contract. Are you saying you would rather not have him on the Bruins for fear of not being able to re-sign Danton Heinen, or Ryan Donato?

No, to my knowledge this kind of trade has never taken place in the NHL. I don't think the issue with this maneuver is that it's so preposterous that it belongs in the realm of video games. I just think that the salary retention option is still "new" to GMs, that, like most things, are afraid to be innovative. And they likely especially hate being the first to try anything.

I just think that this type of move should start happening, and if you're a team like Arizona, or Carolina, or some other crapbag team, why on earth wouldn't you do this move? You get an asset to retain a little over 1M for 1 season while you are rebuilding/have no hope of competing? From the Bruins perspective, I would imagine 1 major concern from doing a move like this might be offending the player. I think that's why McQuaid is the perfect player to do this with. He's got 1 year left on his deal. His salary on its own isn't particularly burdensome. His role as a 6th/7th defenseman is crystal-clearly defined. And the Bruins are re-acquiring him; it's not like they would be dumping him off to another team.
