A Balanced Approach

Description
Would Lou and Kyle help each other out?
Watching for the 2019/20 cap issues.
Keeping the Seattle expansion draft in mind.
No selling the future or getting into a cap bind for a one-time shot.
No super stars magically show up and sign for half price of what they are worth.

Lindholm and Aaltonen compete for 4C slot.
1 year deals for Hamhuis and Kunitz so as to avoid cap crunch next year. Both veterans may have something left in the tank and bring needed toughness and Stanley Cup experience.
Hamhuis also insurance in case Ozhiganov doesn't pan out. Following year Borgman and Liljegren replace Hainsey and Hamhuis. Cap room and picks avail if we wish to load up at trade deadline.
Seattle expansion draft - protect Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Hyman, Kadri, Kapanen, Brown, Reilly, Dermott, Faulk, Andersen. Exposed - Marleau, Riley Nash, Zaitsev, Pelech, Sparks - 1 year to work on it.

2019 Cap of 82 million - 14 players committed at $50 million. If $22 million to resign Sparks, Kapanen, Marner, and Matthews - then $10 million left to fill 5 remaining roster spots. No cap problem as Liljegren and Borgman fill 2 of those spots.

Self Criticism - still can't find a practical, realistic way to fill the #1RHD spot with defensively minded workhorse.

TOR
  1. Beauvillier, Anthony
  2. Ho-Sang, Joshua
  3. Pelech, Adam
  4. 2018 7th round pick (NYI)
  5. 2019 7th round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Babcock's tough love approach may work on Ho-Sang. Worth a try for the potential that is there that NYI can't seem to get out of him.
Pelech - big, reliable, responsible 3rd pair LD, inexpensive, ahead of Borgman or Rosen.
NYI
  1. Gardiner, Jake
  2. Leivo, Josh
  3. Martin, Matt
  4. McElhinney, Curtis
  5. Nielsen, Andrew
  6. 2019 4th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Both Leivo and Ho-Sang not getting fair shots on their existing teams.
With Lou in NYI, betting Tavares stays. Might help Lou's cause to have Tavares buddy back in the fold.
They need a puck moving defenceman and a backup goalie...Can do.
Selling high on McElhinney. Believe Sparks is ready.
2.
TOR
  1. Faulk, Justin
  2. 2018 4th round pick (ARI)
  3. 2018 7th round pick (VGK)
  4. 2019 6th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
We get offense from the right side of the D. New look for the PP.
Even though Faulk is not a defensive D man the right side is still better than it was.
CAR
  1. Beauvillier, Anthony
  2. Bracco, Jeremy
  3. Pickard, Calvin
  4. 2018 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2018 3rd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
In need of backup goalie. Looking for young scoring forwards.
Trading Pickard assumes Ian Scott signed to ELC and is #1 G for Marlies.
3.
TOR
  1. 2018 5th round pick (DET)
  2. 2018 6th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Considering how bad the Pittsburgh defense actually is and how depleted their farm system, Carrick might well be a 3rd pair RD for them. They also have no cap room to do much with.
PIT
  1. Carrick, Connor
  2. 2018 7th round pick (VGK)

i just dont see faulk being the greatest fit on this team, or the reason why we need two more wingers when we are already stacked in that category, but very interesting.
GMTD liked this.

Agreed GMTD, it is a lot for Faulk, but ALL the decent RHD are commanding high prices. Both sides have to agree and on their sites they are discussing a 1st AND Kapanen plus as a fair price....did not want to give up Kapanen.

PhilVr - Assuming you are referring to Kunitz and Ho-Sang: Kunitz - thought on Kunitz was a veteran presence with lots of Playoff experience, physical, and could be realistically put on a one year deal. Leafs are a little young and play a little soft. In need of the right complimentary pieces. To build for the long term, letting prospects develop slowly and ripen to maturity before being given major responsibilities at the NHL level. In times past, before the ShanaPlan, Leaf management often brought up prospects too early and thereby killed their development. On the left side, we have Moore, Engvall, Marchment, Timashov, Grundstrom, and Johnsson. Did not want to count on THREE of them all being ready this year. If I guessed wrong on Grundstrom or Johnsson takes a step back, then maybe one of the others can step up. Just did not want to count on 3 rookies on one side of the ice.
Thought on Ho-Sang - huge potential not being tapped - I have thoughts that we can tap that in ways the NYI have been unable to do so far. They seem close on giving up. We managed to turn Kadri's raw talent and once bad attitude and sculpt it into something more, perhaps we can do the same with Ho-Sang.
