Take Advantage of Cap Space

Description
Nieto is coming off of a strong season with 15 goals and 26 points. He signed 1yr x $1M contract last year and is a RFA this summer. I would guess that he gets a contract in the neighborhood of 2 years at $2M per, which is half of what Pittsburgh pays Hagelin. Nieto is a similar player to Hagelin, as a third-line forward who skates well and is a good penalty killer. Their numbers this past season were comparable, as Hagelin had 10 goals and 31 points.
For swapping a younger, less expensive player for an older, more expensive one, Colorado gets a 2019 4th round pick.

So you’re paying 2 million for a fourth round pick?

Essentially. The Avs will have plenty of cap space next year, even if they get aggressive in free agency. This deal is more about Pittsburgh getting a similar player for half the money, and the Avs leveraging that need, plus their cap space to add a draft pick. The ‘19 4th is the same round and year of the pick they gave up for Colin Wilson
