Kovalchuk? Does it make sense?

Created by: ISDriver
Team: 2018-19 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2018
Published: May 31, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
LA Kings want to get (A) faster; (B) more skilled. Kovalchuk fits the skilled part, but definitely not the faster part. At $6.0m/2yrs and 35 y/o, would it be wiser to go after a younger free agent? Which would most likely mean more term and money. If younger, who fits the criteria?

It makes 0 sense for us to go after any free agent. If you look at our cap space, and at the number of players that have the little number “1” in the bottom right corner, you’ll understand why. Right now our goal should be opening up space to resign Doughty, Kempe, Amadio and anyone else that’s expiring next season

I think Kovalchuk would be a really good fit for LA. They’ve always struggled with scoring. But MT_11 is right. Cap space won’t allow it. If they could dump Phaneuf then maybe it could work. But I don’t see that happening, considering they just traded for him and how hard his contract will be to move.
