Because he's a consistently above average NHL starter who's performed admirably behind some truly awful D corps. Off-ice outbursts, as a rule, do not diminish a player's effectiveness. Lehner's issues are orders of magnitudes less serious than Evander Kane, who consistently scores 25-30 goals and just got a 7 years by $7 million extension. That's a bad deal, and Evander Kane is a bad guy, but it does show how off-ice and on-ice are not all that connected.

I will also refer you to the Eberle example.

I will refer you to Babcock not putting up with Lehner's **** if he tries to say something to him on the bench after being pulled. Babcock would bench him every single game the second he had a meltdown. I will refer you to (despite some front office changes), that this regime will not put up with those types of players. They want good guys and better teammates, which Lehner is not. Lehner would ROT in Toronto and the Toronto media would kill him the second this completely-never-going-to-happen-acquisition would happen.

Dubas is smart enough to recognize that players are a hell of a lot less replaceable than coaches, so if a player and coach can't work together, the logical solution is to get rid of the coach. The job of a coach in the NHL is to get the best out of the players you're given, not to battle with them. Lehner's been solid in Buffalo, so he's clearly not uncoachable. The regime's dealt with guys that have been panned for "not giving it enough effort" by the media (see Nylander, W.), so clearly they're smart enough to recognize that fans'/media's perceptions of character aren't everything or always accurate. Dubas has also dealt with players that sometimes do dumb stuff on the ice (Mason Marchment, former enforcer), and has an NHL-ready coach in the wings that can deal with it (Marlies boss Sheldon Keefe). The media would probably be brutal on Lehner, but a) Players can effectively play through that without losing on-ice effectiveness, even if it wears on them personally, as shown by Eberle, and b) A smart, well run organization, which Toronto certainly appears to be, would be able to help a player manage that, possibly by spending some of their nigh-infinite money on a sport psychologist/psychiatrist.

You literally didn't have to put any of the parenthesis there. I knew who you were talking about lol. Guess we will agree to disagree. I think Lehner would be a poison. & the fact Sparks looks ready to be called up as a back up at least, if not a 1B...there's no way they would trade Andersen, then trade for a guy like Lehner. I like them rolling with Andersen-Sparks and lessening Freddie's workload. They have the assets to acquire a D without including Andersen.

No point in having Andersen as your goalie over a replacement starter if you're only gonna play him 41 games. His main selling point over other guys is his ability to start 70+ games a year. They can acquire a D without dealing Andersen, but getting a 1RD of Pesce's caliber without moving Andersen means either a $10 million dollar long term deal or moving Matthews/Marner/Nylander in all likelihood. If Andersen's in a platoon as opposed to full-time starter, you may as well deal him and sign Petr Mrazek. As for the parentheses, I figured I'd be as clear as possible.

Andersen played 66 games in the regular season...and I think he would be best if he was reduced to late 50's-60.

Huh, thought he'd played more. He might play better with less starts, I'm not sure. But the Leafs don't need him to be better: league average goaltending is perfectly acceptable for them with how stacked they are.
