NYI - Getting picks back

Created by: Tkachinla
Team: 2018-19 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 10, 2018
Published: Jun. 10, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Brodie is worth a mid 1st round pick plus a prospect, at a minimum. Has two years term on a great contract, 28 years old, proven Top 3-4 guy. Would fit in nicely with Leddy and Boychuk:
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/definitive-ranking-nhls-top-23-defencemen-three-seasons/

Stone is worth a mid 2nd rounder:
https://flamesnation.ca/2018/06/08/what-are-defensemen-worth-in-the-trade-market/

Fox is worth a 2018 2nd round pick. Harvard with a few years left at school. American. Born in NY state. Likely would love to have his rights traded to an east coast team.

NYI has not given Ho-Sang much of an opportunity at the NHL level, and ongoing "cultural" difficulties make it easy for NYI to get value back for the player.

Additional Details:
VAN moves back one round in the 2018 draft and gets a veteran player on a much reduced contract.
VAN
  1. Brouwer, Troy ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. 2018 4th round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Retention amount equal to what CGY would pay to buy Brouwer out, except this way CGY only pays him $1.5M for 2 years instead of 4 years.

Gets VAN a veteran player for their 4th line. Lots of cap space with Sedins retiring, plus a very young forward core. Also factor in that Jim Benning isn't that savvy. CGY and VAN have a history of doing deals together.

A top 4 dman at 28 years old is definitely worth a "problem prospect" and a 2nd. Vatanen, an equal player to Brodie (if we're being conservative), netted a Top 6 center (Henrique) plus Blandisi (a roster player with equal value to Ho-Sang). Top 6 centers go for a pretty premium. So, yeah, I firmly believe that a mid-1st plus Ho-Sang is doable for Brodie. Likely on a the lower end of the value curve.

FYI: While this is prepared by "FlamesNation" (I'll admit it's likely subject to a bias or two), it does show recent comparable trades for dmen in a straightforward manner. It's a fair reference for comparable values: https://flamesnation.ca/2018/06/08/what-are-defensemen-worth-in-the-trade-market

Blandisi is an AHL bottom 6 player. And the package for Brodie should stop at Ho Sang and a 2nd

Split this up anyway you like, and the value is good both ways:

Stone + 2018 4th = Ho-Sang (Stone is worth a 3rd round pick in 2018 or 2019)
Brodie = 2018 1st + 2019 2nd (standard price for Top 4 dmen on good contracts -- see all recent comparables over past 4-5 years)
Fox = 2018 2nd (subject to signing a contract, Lou and every GM would do this deal all day)

No Top 4 dman in the NHL goes for a problem prospect (see any piece of news related to NYI and Ho-Sang since he was drafted) and a 2nd. It just doesn't happen. Are you suggesting that Ho-Sang and a 2nd rounder is equal to Henrique? A bonafide Top 6 center? Not a chance, even for a cap-strapped team.

Stone isn't worth a 2nd with retention let alone without. His contract stinks and he was bad. Brodie isn't worth a mid round 1st (Calling 11/12 a mid first is a stretch, especially in this draft) and a prospect. He's good on a good contract, but he's not an elite defenseman.
