Team: 2018-19 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2018
Published: Jun. 14, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Flames trade from a position of strength (Their D) to strengthen their Top 6. They take on more salary as part of the payment, and lose some decent pieces, but overall they improve and make room on the backend for Rasmus / Valmaki to make a push.

For the Buffalo trade, I added Scandella, but Bagosian could replace him depending on what Buffalo wanted to do.

On the 2nd line, RoR and Jankowski are interchagable between RW and C. Bennett playing with Backs is a good move I think, as it will help him get his confidence back. Him and Jankowski could flip on lines 2-3 as the season moves along depending on how they are playing.

Flames D is definitely weaker, but the hope is that Kulak continues to take steps forward and Rasmus lives up to hype and the flashes he has shown. Signing someone like Thomas Hickey could also sure up the D a bit, but I want to leave a spot for the Rookies to compete for.

i think you need to add value to get back the players you're looking for, Brodie and Ferland may not even be enough to get ROR.
I highly doubt Hoffman is going to be given away for a bottom pair defender and a 13th forward.

Brodie & Ferland is overpayment for ROR, hence the added player. Let’s see 2C for 2/3D & 1RW? Hoffman may not get even that if he is involved, the situation is in flux.

O'Reilly produces and plays solid defence while having a terrible supporting cast.
Brodie showed last year what happens when he's not paired with Giordano. He and Hamoniv were not very good at all together.
Ferland was someone for Gaudreau to bounce a puck of off into the net, a 3rd line winger on an average team, 4th line on a deep team.

Hopefully you are getting a bunch of comic relief from your comments, cause they sure are funny. Ferland actually has a great shot, is fast and physical. Brodie had an off year, offensively but still plays over 21 minutes a night against top competition. People act like ROR is the second coming of Malkin, or something. He isn’t. He led the NHL in faceoff %, which is terrific, but otherwise he’s a very good, but not great C. He also tends to over-value his own worth and gets into fights with management. Finally, his comments this past Spring was a plea to be traded. I would like him, but not at any cost.

I understand you're a Flames fan.
I have nothing against Brodie. I actually like him, as he grew up not too far away from me and I've spent some time with him.
His corsi stats last year were not great. He's -32 over the last two seasons. So it seems he's having a hard time against that top competition.
The flames have one won 5 playoff games since Brodie has been a flame. If he's supposed to be one of their best, and the team isn't consistently making it into the playoffs or winning playoffs series then to me this says he may be an average defender that paired very well with an elite defender.

That BUF deal is a conversation starter for sure, but I think the Flames end up having to add to get it done. Brodie + Bennett + a prospect is definitely close though.

Hoffman deal is a tougher one to understand value on with the recent news. I think GMs are going to wait a little while to see what transpires in the media and make Dorion sweat a bit longer before trying to add the player to their dressing room.

+ If CGY ever got O'Reilly, you can be very, very, very sure that he will be playing center. He's the best faceoff man in the league by a good margin. He's taken more draws than anyone over the past 3 seasons and still has a 58% win percentage. Better than Bergeron on both metrics...that's the most elite of the elite on draws. Jankowski isn't pushing him out of the circle.

With the trades you've made, I think the lineup would be:

Gaudreau / Monahan / Hoffman
Tkachuk / O'Reilly / Foo
Bennett / Backlund / Frolik
*depth guy* / Jankowski / Shore

*Mangiapane, Dube, Lomberg

Thanks cool that you know him. I don’t put too much faith in +/- as there are too many other factors that influence the numbers. If you do, hey we could substitute someone like, say, Kulak in his place. Much better +/-....... I would agree with you that Giordano is an elite defender. As for Brodie there is an ongoing discussion as to whether his numbers drop-off is due to not playing with Gio, or being forced to play the LD side versus his preferred RD side. Three years ago when the Flames went to the playoffs with Gio injured and Brodie carrying the team, we saw that it was not necessarily Gio. In addition he has been dealing with some personal issues (sick wife, baby) but I anticipate with those past him he should get back on track. If he does not get traded the new coach has indicated he may get a chance on the right side so I guess we will see. In any case, the Flames reasons for considering a trade is they have several high-end D prospects but no room, while at the same time needing to strengthen RW and get some right shots. We’ll see what happens.

I’d probably put Jankowski at 2RW, or maybe have him & ROR switch with ROR taking the draws. The fourth line would probably be Mangiapane, Dube/Shore, Foo/Lomberg.

For the O'Reilly deal, I can see where you are coming from, since ROR is a great player. Scandella is added as a cap dump for BUF (so assuming neutral to negative value for him). I think Brodie and Ferland are close in terms of value, but there might need to be a bit of an add from Calgary.

For Hoffman, I actually think given the current environment this is pretty decent. In fact I'm hesitant as a Flames fan to pull the trigger. Will be interesting to see how it plays out - no matter what happens though it's a very unfortunate situation for the Karlsson's.

Not ready to give up on Bennett yet and I think the Flames have the pieces to get the deal done without him being included. Ferland was more effective than Bennett last year and brings a lot to a team, while Brodie could use a change of scenery (and the opportunity to play on the right side again). Taking on Scandella's contract is part of the deal as well. If needed, a pick / prospect could be included (not one of the D prospects though or Dube / Parsons).

I totally agree on the ROR center comment. I actually make that point in the details section, that Him and Janko would be interchangable, with Janko even sliding down and Bennett coming up as a possibility. I like the options that having ROR creates for Peter's and would definitely make him a target this off-season if I was Tre.
