What Else To Fix The Flames

Created by: ekpaul87
Team: 2018-19 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2018
Published: Jun. 25, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Flames need more scoring depth, but probably can't afford to give a long term deal to a JVR or James Neal, so instead they could flip Stone for Boedker and sign a secondary UFA in Riley Nash.

The forward group here gives a lot of flexibility to move guys up and down the lineup as they get hot/struggle, and has Spencer Foo in the minors as a callup option.

On D, the top 4 is pretty set, but Kulak, Pateryn and Andersson can battle it out for the bottom pairing, and any of the three can move up to top 4 to cover injuries as needed.

Calgary wants to get out from under this money. Boedker makes the situation worse for them so they probably pass.

Which is a good idea in theory if you can move Stone for picks, but I don't see that happening, and Boedker fills a more useful role for the same length of time, and basically the same money.

Boedker won't be coming to CGY with that $4M cap hit unless Frolik isn't around with his $4.3M cap hit. Next year is fine, but gets tight with the new contracts.

Lindholm will get $4.5-$5M without a doubt. Anything less and Treliving and Peters are working serious magic. Could see Lindholm and Hanifin doing matching $5M x 6 year deals.

I pulled comparables for both players in this post: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/747430

---------------------

Would love Riley Nash, but he'll catch $3M+ from someone.
Love Khudobin but he'll probably stay in BOS somehow. Bernier, Hutton, Ward would be my 3 guys to focus on in that case.
Pateryn at that price/term would be a fantastic Stone replacement.

Frolik is much more effective than Boedker at this point. The 3M line is one of the most effective 2 way lines in hockey right now.

I’d give you Okposo for Frolik and Bennett

That's not what I'm implying. I agree.

The point is that CGY can't have a whack of $4M+ guys on the roster. Especially in a 3rd line role. Bennett and Jankowski will both be cemented on that line this year, so CGY would do well to find the optimal RW for their chemistry. Maybe it's an internal guy like Foo; maybe it's a cheap UFA like Czarnik.

No dice. With Okposo's contract, and injury history, CGY isn't moving a key guy from one of the best 2nd lines in the league for a higher cap hit and same-aged player. And definitely not adding Bennett to boot.

looks like Frolik is on the 3rd line and Bennett is on the 4th. Your overselling Okposo’s injury history. He had one big problem at the end of the prior season and it was his doctors fault not his

OK, good to know on the injury front. It all seemed quite bad when I was following via media at the time.

Issue is, Frolik and Okposo have very similar career production anyways. Frolik is cheaper by $1.7M. Frolik already works well on 2nd line with Backlund and Tkachuk (together, they were one of the top possession lines in the league last year; certainly one of the most effective 2nd lines, great for tough matchups). Same age as Okposo. And you're trying to convince Treliving to give you Bennett on top of that?

And I haven't even referenced the 5 years remaining on Okposo's big contract. Or the Modified NTC that will really hurt the Flames come Seattle expansion time.

That all adds up to a straightforward, "no thanks". Treliving wouldn't do Okposo for Frolik in a 1-for-1.

Frolik and Bennett are on the 3rd and 4th because I was trying to balance the lines out a bit. They'll almost definitely be 2nd and 3rd.
