That's the sort of deal where the Habs don't even let the ink on the paper dry before filing in with the NHL registry and someone is looking for a new job the day after.

Gotta agree with this. I know the asking price on Patches is high but that's not a price we're willing to pay

You're a King's fan. Let me run this past you.

Rumour was that the Kings and Habs had a deal that fell apart because Patches and the Kings were too far apart. You offered 6 X 6 and he wanted 8 X 8. There's no way you could do that - even in this post now you're hard up against the cap and you have 21 guys left. All we know about the return offered is that Muzzin wasn't involved, nor Vilardi or TT.

How's about this: you take Patches and throw in a third pairing D man - Jordie Benn, or a prospect - and we take Clague and Phaneuf off your hands? I like Clague to fix our LHD problems and we could afford Phaneuf's salary. Assuming our throw in costs a million, you'd have 4.25 left. You could use that to luring a new d guy in from free agency or promote Muzzin to the top line. Or is Phaneuf not playing like a plyon these days? Is he important to you? If he's playing good how's about we make it Patches for Brown and Clague and you find your own third liner? Maybe we ask for a second or third round pick for eating his brutal contract?

That is tempting to get rid of Phaneuf's contract. He actually played very well for the Kings when he came over, but who knows if he can sustain it. I love Clague. He is a solid top 4 D-Man. Maybe a top 2 pairing. You never really know until they do it, but that is what my eyes and gut tell me.

Clague, Phanuef for Patches and a 3rd. If we resign Patches. You keep the pick.

I'd think long and hard about that, however I think the Kings are done right now. Maybe a small move here and there.
