Sens Rebuild

Created by: Kellz96
Team: 2018-19 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2018
Published: Jul. 12, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A rebuild based around an Erik Karlsson sign and trade that aims to get prospects and picks and build a promising future in Ottawa. The team will however need to remain somewhat competitive next season because they do not have their first round pick for 2019. This plan takes on some bad short term contracts in order to maximize returns, make deals work and also to get roster players that can at the very least help them remain competitive. The only way a plan like this could happen is if Melnyk sells to an owner that will spend money for long term success.

In your description you said that the team needs to remain somewhat competitive. I'm not sure how you can be competitive with JG (who I love as a player) is your 1st line center and Dzingel who I never saw play center in the NHL is your 2nd line center.

I think staying competitive means taking on the contracts of Tatar and Callahan who are legit NHL players instead of those spots being filled by unready prospects or AHL caliber players. The ultimate goal for the sens has to be to pick lower than 4th.

This line-up is not even close to being as good as last year's and last year we finished 30th in the league.

I can definitely see where you are coming from and agree that a Pageau-Dzingel one two down the middle is not ideal. Smith would be better suited their instead of Dzingel. But I also think the amount of youth in this lineup can help the team more than you think. Tkachuk, White, Cirelli, Chabot, Sergachev and possibly even Brown could all play on this team and that is something I feel Ottawa's lineup really lacked over the last few years. If Anderson can bounce back even a little from last season I do not see this as a huge stretch. Tatar and Callahan would also provide some leadership and depth.
