Getting creative with Ellis in 2019

Description
Seems like a "creative" idea to solve the RHD whole with a quality player at a reasonable cost long term would be to work out a deal with another team if Ryan Ellis hits free agency. In that deal, the non-cap team who signs him to a 7 year 7 million dollar contract would then flip him to the Leafs at 50% retention for a generous futures package of picks and prospects. Essentially buying the futures in exchange for cash and their retention slot. I'm not sure if this would be legal from a CBA standpoint however.

Something similar with an already signed RHD (Pesce) here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/807825

Vegas signs Ryan Ellis to 7x7 and then retains 50% to send him to the Leafs

Could be another team like Arizona instead.

A team that can afford the retention slot for the long term (possibly less if a new CBA allows a reset on that restriction), isn't traditionally at the cap max and is looking to stock up on futures.

Creative thought, but no way Vegas is going to sign a guy like Ellis to trade him. Again, way to much in terms of picks and prospects going out the door for Ellis. He's not a #1 defenseman.

I'm intrigued by the strategy. I don't know if a team would handcuff themselves $3.5M for 7 years, but I suppose that's where the picks and prospects come in to make it worth their while.

you just gave up a first, second and third plus your first pick this year, kapanan and 2 others for 3.5 mil in cap space. its called get rid of that junk guy named zietsev. this is the worst idea i have ever seen just because what you gave up. creative but not effective
