STL was 2nd in the league (1st in their division by 4 points) on Nov 21 last year and ended up missing the playoffs. Florida was 29th in the league (7th in their division) on Nov 21 last year and only missed the playoffs by 1 point.
November standings wont tell you which teams are legit
All true, but as a general rule, I think the 20 game mark will give us a pretty good idea of who's legit and who's not. Like everyone says, "You can't make the playoffs in the first 20 games, but you can certainly miss the playoffs in the first 20 games." Like you said, there's always gonna be exceptions (STL, FLA, & DAL last season) though.
