Safe to say Simmonds is a rental, and leafs are going to need controllable, cheap FWDs like Johnsson next year and the year after, so while I am not opposed to bringing in Simmonds as a rental, I do not want to lose any players off our current roster. Based on his poor season, may be could be had for a 2nd and a prospect? Also fine with the Edler trade, but I don't think you need that condition in there, not like his next contract is going to be 5-7 years, is going to be a short one, and he's not good enough that I would lose a 1st over as part of an extension.

Yeah of the potentially available UFA defensemen Edler rings out as the best player to me. I agree that the extension condition is probably not necessary, especially since we basically gave them Leivo for nothing too. As for Simmonds, I was just thinking as a Flyer fan what I would want. I'd want a roster player and a 1st, at minimum. He has been a valuable contributor to that team scoring between 25-30 goals a year for the last 6 or 7 years. That's the going rate for those guys, and this is the year where we can financially go all in for rentals.

Is anyone else aware that Johnsson has a higher points per game than Simmons this year?

While playing close to 5 minutes less per game?

With worse line-mates for most of his games?

And a +/- that's better by about 20?

And good defensive play?

And not a July UFA?

8 years younger?

For way less $?
