Habs deals with Vegas and Winnipeg at TDL

Created by: RoadRunner72

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Vegas top 4 defense looks strong for several more years, with a few more good prospects on the way up. Let's assume they would part with their top LD prospect for a strong offer to help them win now. Bellemare is included to help balance cap and open a roster spot for Danault.

The Jets trade makes some sense for a win-now Jets team. With Kulikov out on LD and assuming Trouba and possibly Myers both RD will also move this summer, they have gained some cap flexibility for resigning Laine, Connor etc. Petry on RD also gives them a boost for the playoff runs in 2019 and 2020 at reasonable cost. When Buff returns there is a log jam on right D, perhaps he plays some wing or one of the D's plays their off-side during the playoffs. Lots of depth there. Kulak is added to the deal to provide an upgrade on 3rd pair left D for Jets compared to Kulikov. Habs gain a valuable prospect and a pick, planning for the future.

The Habs roster is basically a depth chart for 2019-20. The defense is very young but has several promising prospects in their early 20's.

Vegas rejects the first trade. Montreal has no interest in trading Danault. Doesn't work for either side.

Montreal rejects the 2nd trade. Petry will get similar to what Yandle got when he was traded. Getting Vesalainen + 2nd + a big cap dump for Petry is not worth it.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm just throwing a few ideas out there. My point is directed toward whether top 10 teams who's current Cup windows are wide open would consider moving top prospects to beef up their current line-ups with key contributors for the next couple years. Negotiation to fully balance the trade contents is secondary to the key pieces.

I'm thinking that by the time Brannstrom and Vesalainen are key contributors to their teams those teams will be on the downward slide from their Cup windows. Vegas will likely drop off when Fleury finally regresses, Winnipeg will be susceptible to their older leaders (Wheeler, Buff) regressing at some point.

I'm sure Bergevin would consider moving Danault for the right offer. Never know. He seems to recognize their window for a long playoff run is still a few years away.

You're probably correct that Petry could get a bigger return. The Yandle trade is a reasonable comparable, but Yandle was 28 years old at the time, and Petry is 31. So expectations would probably be a little lower. But largely depends on who's interested, multiple bidders could drive up the price.
