2019 Offseason

Created by: vinny70
Team: 2019-20 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 15, 2019
Published: Jan. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Need another player who could drive a line (Panarin), a true top pairing dman (Hamilton), figure out the goalie situation, as well as get a reliable number 2 center (I have faith in Zacha, if not, Boqvist should develop into that). Also, assuming the Devils miss the playoffs and draft somewhere between 10-15 in the first round, Trevor Zegras is my guy given he falls to them.

Trades
1.
NJD
  1. 2019 3rd round pick (WSH)
  2. 2020 6th round pick (WSH)
WSH
Ben Lovejoy (At the upcoming trade deadline. Could realistically go to any playoff team looking to bolster their defense.)
    2.
    NJD
    1. Pyrochta, Filip
    2. 2019 2nd round pick (NSH)
    NSH
    1. 2020 4th round pick (NJD)
    Additional Details:
Brian Boyle (Also at trade deadline. Could fetch a low end prospect and a decently high draft pick. Despite it being a buyers market this year, I feel as if most teams in the league regard Boyle to be a top-tier bottom 6 forward however redundant that may sound.)
    3.
    CAR
    1. Sharangovich, Yegor
    2. Wood, Miles
    3. 2020 2nd round pick (NJD)
    Additional Details:
Could really use a defensemen like Hamilton in the org. Price guaranteed to be high, but I feel like this deal makes sense enough for both sides. Feel free to comment your opinion.
    4.
    NJD
    1. 2020 5th round pick (STL)
    2. 2021 3rd round pick (STL)
    STL
    1. Santini, Steven
    2. 2020 6th round pick (WSH)
    Additional Details:
Big Santini fan (he's from my hometown) but it's transparent he'll never be more than a bottom-pairing, penalty-killing defensive defenseman. Shero would be smart to move on while he still has value due to his age.
    5.
    NJD
    1. Bear, Ethan
    2. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
    EDM
    1. Schneider, Cory
    Additional Details:
Assuming Schneider begins to regain form throughout the course of the rest of the season, trading him is ideal since his ultimate regression due to age/injury is inevitable. This is a very tricky trade value wise, and fit wise since virtually no team is in the market for an expensive veteran goaltender. Assuming Talbot is moved, EDM could be a trade partner.

Overall i feel that a lot of the moves make sense. Miles Wood is projecting to be a solid middle 6 forward, but you have to give something to get something and Hamilton is worth the risk (assuming whatever personality issues seem to be plaguing him wherever he goes). I also feel that the Johansson extension is pretty risky. That is a steep cap hit with relatively long term implications should his injury history persist.

I was very hesitant on the Johansson extension for those reasons, but given the Devils cap space, need for puck possession forwards and lack of them in the market, it almost felt necessary. I wouldn't mind the Devils trading him, but unless he goes on a tear for the rest of the season, it will feel like they're selling low regardless of and because of injury issues. You're right that it is very risky, and hopefully Shero makes the right decision for the team in the long run.

I really like it, but I don't think they should go that close to the cap in one year. Also, they would have no room to sign Hall & Hischier the next off-season. Panarin would be great, just don't think the cap works out with. everything else. I'd prioritize a top 2 defenseman over another person who can drive our second line right now, since I believe we'd have to choose on of the two at this time. Really like the trades, I'd be happy with every one of them.
