Huuuuge overpay by the Blues. Perunvich is off limits I'd think. Eddy is a top 4 being traded for another top four; just switch left handed to right handed. Reinke is young, cost-controlled and a viable call-up...I get including him. Schmaltz was placed on waivers, and no one claimed him for free. He's a nothing. The 2nd round pick and Perunovich make this deal a no go. Your Allen for Smith swap is actually a win for Calgary since Allen is young, may (that's a big "may" though) improve, and has already proven he can play some. Smith is simply washed up at this point in his career. Allen is no gem, but in this trade, he's better than Smith.

A few responses to the above
1. Both Edmundson and Hanifin are left handed
2. Agree Schmaltz went through waivers unclaimed but that means if he is included in a trade, then the receiving team can place him in the minors without putting him through waivers. This way they can groom him to their own game while paying him a minor league salary and not taking up a spot on the NHL roster. While his value isn't high, it's more than nothing.
3. This trade isn't about winning the goalie swap, it's about getting Allen off the roster so we can go with Binnington going forward. To the Vancouver fan, please note you are no longer in playoff position because of our goalie situation. Also remember Mike Smith's contract ends this year so we can sign whichever backup we choose in free agency. While I'm not counting on a Mike Smith comeback, a change of scenery could be good for both goalies who are having down years.
4. The upside on recently turned 22yo Hanifin is higher than that of Edmundson. He's already better offensively and probably at least mildly better defensively. Calgary would need to see a win in order for them to go forward with this trade while they are currently in strong playoff position.

I'm all for getting Allen and his $4 million off the roster.

I think you can make an argument that most defensemen are "at least mildly better" than Eddy. I'd like to see the Note move him in the off-season.
