Montreal has no interest in Merkley. He is known for his major attitude problems and I doubt Montreal has any interest in him whatsoever.

Why would Montreal take on Spooner's contract for an AHL guy?

Merkley is viewed as the second best prospect at Defense in the league. Would fill the massive gap we have at LD for years to come. Taking Tatar out of the lineup leaves room in the line up for up and coming younger guys. Right now, when everyone is healthy, the four lines are saturated.

Cooper Marody is 22 and point a game in the AHL. Pretty good prospect and debt. The habs have more than enough gap to take Spooners contract without any damage. I don’t see the Oilers trading anyone else besides picks.
