summer signings with Edm and NYI trades

Created by: watto
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 25, 2019
Published: Feb. 26, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These trades are about opening up cap space and filling short term needs for the Leafs while our young Dmen develop. I was conscious about Edm cap space but this trade Edm leaves them with 9 mil cap to spend on 5 or 6 players. Brown is there for McDavid & PK and Kadri give's them cap friendly solid centre that can help on the 1st or 2nd PP. NYI get some goal scoring with a young top six forward and a currently 3rd pairing Dmen. Nakita is a cap dump but NYI has the room and if he does get back to his rookie form it's a steal for a 4th round pick. T

Would love that deal from an Oilers POV. I don't think Leafs fans will like it though.

I am a Leafs fan and I know the Oilers trade is a bit one sided but it opens up the room to sign Marner long term and pick up Ferland. Looking at the next 3-4 year I think Ferland would be more valuable then Johnsson. Pulock is a solid young D who has put up back to back 30 point seasons and is cap friendly. I think we need to be clearing cap space and getting a team ready that can make a run for the cup in 20-21 and beyond even at the expense of the current team. As much as I want them to win it right now I don't think this leafs team is strong enough.

You don't trade Brown for Kassian. Brown can play on most lines, while Kassian is a 4th liner and is paid just a little less than Brown. Huge win for the Oilers. Then Kadri for Benning. You could likely pick Benning up on waivers for free and you are going to give up a multi 30 goal scoring centre for him. This is just a terrible trade that doesn't free up that much cap.

Johnsson is already more valuable than Ferland and will be cheaper too as an rfa vs Ferland as a ufa. The grass isn't always greener...

There was a report out of Edmonton yesterday that they tried to get Brown from the Leafs and that Benning was the likely offer and the Leafs said no. So in theory, you're flat out giving Kadri away here.

This trade frees up over $3,000,000 for the Leafs.

Trading Brown and Zaitsev for picks clears up like $6.5 million. That looks a lot better then $3m to me.

You don't trade a 30 goal scoring center to clear cap space. Dubas would never do that trade.

Agreed, I should have added a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick from Edmonton or prospect.

One on one I agree that Johnsson is better than Ferland but I think the Leafs need a player like Ferland more than Johnsson. Looking at what Domi did to Johnsson and the hits on Kadri we need someone with presence that can combat that. Leafs are lucky with all the skill they have but they need some grit. Your right about Kadri, I should have added a draft pick or prospect.

No doubt they need some grit, but not up front if it is at the cost of a player like Johnsson. He is found money.

If a rental 2nd line centre (Hayes) moves for a 1st, player, and prospect, Kadri should be able to bring in the D we need without having to sacrifice anyone else. Or, since Edmonton is interested in Brown, and there was a rumoured deal involving Nurse for Brown++, they might like a deal including Zaitsev and Kadri can be shipped to the Canes for Hamilton.
