I don't like this at all for Montreal no way the Habs sign Gardiner for that much.

in 1-2 years, romanov can fill that role. i was all in for signing gardiner like a few weeks back, but this guy is the 2nd best D man on the leafs, and the leafs D core is crap, so that means he must be ass too. dont waste money on him. find a cheaper replacement who can fill in for 1-2 years. heck even brook can play on the left side. maybe we play him next season beside weber, if he's ready

Gardiner is actually really good, and he'd be a great fit with Weber, since he moves the puck so well. Weber would help insulate him defensively, and Gardiner would help Weber exit the zone. The overpayment is unfortunate but necessary to land a top UFA defenseman (who's still only 28). It's a bit more than what Fowler or Ellis got, but the cap is going up.
