This is a modified version of my previous Draft Day Trades team. I saw a similar trade done in @Oilersin2030 team, BETTER THAN CHIRELLI , that intrigued me and made me want to add my own spin to it. Here is the original trade:
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1066961
But, here we go.
Shero starts draft day off with a bang, and sends Hallsy back to the Oilers, for Bear, Yamamoto, the rights to Poolparty, and the Oiler's 2019 1st, 2nd, and 4th round picks. We send Santini as well just to get rid of that slacker.
Secondly, he trades Greene to a playoff team to give him a shot at a Cup before he retires.
The Noesen trade is just to get him off the roster, because f*ck him and his garbage ass play.
The Zajac trade is for the same reason as the Greene trade, but he gets to go play at home. We take a couple prospects, a pick, and retain almost half of Zajac's salary.
Then Shero trades Poolparty to Washington for a 2019 2nd round pick.
Last trade is a to send the 2019 3rd we got from LA to the Isle for rights to Ilya Sorokin. Then Shero buys out Schneider and let's Blackwood and Sorokin battle for reps.
Then, because we now have 2 1st round draft picks, and both would probably be in the top 5, Shero is able to draft some generational talent who will have an immediate impact on the team (I used Hughes and Kakko just for sh*ts and gigs).
Then Shero signs Artemi Panarin to a 7 year, $11 million dollar deal for 2 reasons. First, to fill the void on the left wing that is now there because of the departure of Taylor Hall. We are going to have to overpay by a small margin, but he still gets a semi-big market team that is literally across a river from Manhattan. Secondly, we get a less injury prone version of Taylor Hall.
Finally, we sign Erik Karlsson to a 1 year, 16.6 million dollar contract to come onto this team and help teach our young d-core to be more offensively minded with the puck, and how to be responsible while doing it. We then let him walk at the end of next season, hoping that at least a couple of the young b*stards we have on defense retained some of the information Karlsson taught them. However, we would have enough cap space to resign him if Shero wanted to as well. It would make the 2021-22 and 2022-23 off-seasons a little cap tight, but not unmanageable.
These moves give us $34 million in cap space, not counting the cap raise that will happen, for the 2020-21 season, which is more than enough money to resign Nico, Bratt, Vatanen, and Blackwood all to long term deals.
- Nico $42 million/6 years ($7 mil AAV)
- Bratt $21 million/ 6 years ($3.5 mil AAV)
- Vatanen $22 million/4 years ($5.5 mil AAV)
- Blackwood $9 million/3 years ($3 mil AAV)
It also gives them plenty of space to sign one of the many big named dmen who will be free agents in 2020, if the Devils let Karlsson walk at the end of next season.
*All extensions would be signed during the summer of 2019.
Islanders will NOT part ways with Sorokin, especially for a 3rd
He may be the next starter after Lehner, but that's only if he agrees to come over here from Russia.
And yes, the Islanders may not want to get rid of him, but as it sits right now, he has no experience playing in the NHL, or any North American league I believe. The game is much faster, the players are better skilled, the rink is smaller so the angles are tighter, and the overall ability of the teams here is just greater. So for those reasons, I believe he is only as value ble as his draft pick at this moment.

If that's all his value is, why the h*ll would the Islanders part with him? Even if he's a flop, his potential is way higher than trading him away before giving him a shot.

I don't disagree with you, but Lou may not want to wait for him to make up his mind about the jump to the NHL. But according to you guys, objectivity obviously has no place in hockey trades, so why don't I offer a 2019 2nd instead.

He will prove you wrong. Numerous players have come over from Europe and excelled after adjusting to the rink size and style of play. That is not an excuse.

I really hope he does, but I'm determining his value as of right now, not future potential. And you're also right, it isn't an excuse, it's a valid reason.

Capfriendly always surprises me with how knowledgeable some people are of players that are outside of the league. I would've expected the biggest issue with this would be with the Vesalainen trade and not the Sorokin trade as I never assumed for people to have a great understanding of who he is. (yes I know Vesalainen is playing in the KHL, but he at least has some time playing in the NHL).
Now what do you think it would take for Sheisty Shero to swipe Sorokin out from under Lucky Lou, realistically?

Why are you so dead set on Sorokin? Goalie prospects rarely get traded, because the market for them is so far below what they can bring to a team. I don't see You moving Sorokin for any reason

Because I really like him and I would rather have two young goalies fighting for a starter job, like the Ducks had with Anderson and Gibson, than old-man Schneider stealing starts away from Blackwood, or overpaying for Bobrovsky.
