Marleau 3 Way
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 3, 2019
Published: Jun. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description TOR->ARZ:
P.Marleau, 1st—>M.Hossa, 2nd
ARZ->LAK:
P.Marleau(50%rtn)->I.Kovalchuk(50%rtn),3rd
Basically,
-TOR turns P.Marleau, 1st into
M.Hossa, 2nd
-ARZ turns M.Hossa, 2nd, $3,125,000 cap space into
I.Kovalchuk(50%rtn), 1st, 3rd
-LAK turns I.Kovalchuk(50%rtn), 3rd into
P.Marleau(50%rtn)
During the 2019-20 season the retained salaries have no effect on LAK cap space. But they receive $3,125,000 in cap space in 2020-21 they wouldn’t otherwise have. ARZ has Kovalchuk for $6,250,000 in 2019-20 then for $3,125,000 in 2020-21 when Marleau’s retained salary is off the books. They also no longer pay Hossa’s salary. The Leafs escape all of Marleau’s $6,250,000 at the expense of a 1st round pick.
When Hyman and Dermott return and subsequent moves are made, ie waivers or trades, the Leafs will have around $2mil. in cap space.

Marleau trade is mostly fair.
Philly would never agree to that trade
