Nope, the habs can sign Karlsson without making any other trades. Just because the habs have had lots of cap space the last couple of seasons doesn't mean it's a requirement. It is good to save cap space for exactly this situation, where star UFA's like Karlsson and Duchene want to join your team.

We have sell Alzner. + primeau will never play in Montreal. We have to many good players needing contracts in the next 2 years. Lets not go to leafland.

Alzner can be bought out after this season (or possibly traded if he manages to crack the NHL lineup).

Primeau will be the starter in Laval for the next 3-4 years. Price will only have 3 years left on his contract and Primeau could be his successor.

Domi, Mete, Juulsen need signed after next season. Assuming Domi gets $7M, Mete gets $3M, Juulsen gets $1.5M then the habs need about $7M. Weise and Peca contracts would be over, as would the Mason buyout penalty. That adds about $3M. Assuming cap goes up another $3M the habs have $6M. They just need another $1M, either already in reserve for 2019-20, or through good negotiating with Domi, mete or Juulsen. Other option is a trade.
