The leafs can already afford to sign Marner to anything other than like a max deal.

My understanding is they have 13.5M in cap space currently - 6.6M will be taken up by Johnsson and Kapanen, leaves 7M left for Marner

Horton on LTIR frees up like $5M. Plus Hyman will also be on LTIR to start the season.

Ah I see, I thought the Horton LTIR is accounted for in the 13.5M already. Doesn't really change the fact that it still leaves TOR short on cap to make any meaningful upgrades for that right side of the defence. Brodie would be a top pair RS dman, also saving on cap for Leafs to make adjustments elsewhere

With Hyman, Dermott, and Horton on LTIR, with the current semi-complete Kapanen/Johnsson contracts, and EvolvingWild's Marner cap projection the leafs have ~$3.4M to upgrade on a 20 man roster. The leafs won't be able to aquire an $8M defenseman without moving Zaitsev, but they have some space to work with now to aquire a Colin Miller type defenseman. If the leafs made this deal it wouldn't be for the cap savings.
