This would set us up very nicely for now and the future.
Plenty of contracts come off the books over the next few years.
Expansion protection would look like this:
Forward: G, Couts, Ehlers, Hayes, TK, Patty, OL
Defense: Provy, Sanheim, Myers
Goalie: Hart
Main guys exposed are JVR and Jake. I would look to move JVR next offseason as I think he will put up 30 goals and might not seem like that bad of a contract for 3 more years for a team in need of goal scoring. Especially with the contracts being given out lately. Better to get rid of a guy a year early than try to do it a year late.
Trading JVR also would help with resigning Myers , Patty and Lindblom next offseason as there would be 8M to sign 5 players to round out the roster. Then the following offseason if Seattle takes Jake, it frees up money to resign Hart and Sanheim to extensions and fill the remaining 5 spots. Over the next 2 years we should have players on ELCs like Frost, Farabee and Ratcliffe coming in to fill the forward void left by Jake and JVR. Then on defense York and Zamula might be looking to earn a spot in camp to make up for losing Ghost( but it was a necessary move as we can only protect 3 D in the expansion draft).
Also the trade for Reimer makes sense ( especially with salary retained) as we need a goalie either signed or as a pending UFA to expose to Seattle. At that point Hart will be much more established and can sign another inexpensive vet.
Trading for Oleksiak shores up the third pair and gives a mentor to Morin that has a very similar style of play. He also adds some more physicality that we lost from trading Gudas ( even though Niskanen isn’t adverse to throwing the body).
