Only Marner Left

Created by: ngutmann
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 4, 2019
Published: Jul. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs will be right against the cap ceiling (as in, less than $100k within the max). There will be lots of questions with the depth players we use (Forwards - Mikheyev/Gauthier/Petan/Agostino/Bracco and Defensemen - Holl/Marincin/Gravel/Harpur/Sandin) and a lot will depend on their waiver eligibility and cap hit.
Expect a lot of moving almost on a daily basis to keep under the cap and hope that Marner will sign for approximately $10 million or under (probably unlikely).

The Leafs may need to pay luxury tax to be slightly over the tax (what are the rules for that?) as they definitely have the money to do that. Otherwise some minor trades may need to happen to clear just a little more cap space.
The Kerfoot and Ceci signings came in a bit higher than they should have been (Ceci at $4.5M was expected but is a bit much for his caliber) and (Kerfoot signing is probably good looking into the future but a bit steep considering our cap situation this season). The Kadri trade was definitely good, we got a 3rd line center almost as capable of him and a top pairing RHD, however, contrary to the public thought, we actually lost cap room in that trade, not created more cap space.

It's going to be pretty tough to make moves during the season that close to the ceiling. What if a team offer sheets Marner around 11 mil a season? If the leafs match they will have to give someone away.

Then you take the 4 1st Rounders...

Not many teams that:
a) Have the cap room to add an 11m player now
b) If they do have the room, those teams likely dont want to be near the 81.5m cap
c) most of the teams that could afford him are not even slamdunks to make playoffs, meaning any of their next 4 1st round picks could be lottery picks.

No you don't. You keep Marner. None of those 4 first rounders would be as good as him.

But all 4 together are far better than him. Why would Leafs want another Marner anyway if he gets offer sheeted? So that he can ask for 11 mill and walk again? They have the Stars already, they just need depth.

With that logic they should trade Matthews and tavares also. What an idiot.

Islanders or Montreal could. They would be playoff teams for sure with him.

Did you miss the part where I said they have the stars already. This is what happens when a team needs to pay out 9 mil plus to three players, the depth suffers.

But they could trade Matthews and tavares for a bunch of draft picks that added up would be better than them. That was your logic. Don't try and deny it or twist it around to something else. That is what you literally just said.

It would only makes sense to take a Marner offer sheet because they ALREADY have stars. It’s like you’re not even reading what I’m saying. If they traded Tavares and Matthews for draft picks then they wouldn’t have stars anymore now would they? That is what I said and I stand by it, 4 firsts are worth more to a team with stars then one player who takes away depth.

The picks they would get for Matthews and tavares would be far better than Matthews and tavares are now. So trade them and get better. That is your logic.

Jesus man it’s not hard. If they didn’t have Matthews and Tavares they wouldn’t have stars, so it wouldn’t make sense to allow the Marner offer sheet. That is my reasoning behind why 4 firsts is better than Marner for the Leafs

Stop changing your story. You said you would rather have draft picks than your star because the draft pics are better. If draft pics are better than one star then they are better than all stars. Trade all your stars for draft pics and your team gets better. That is your logic. You are an idiot. Just accept that and move on with your dad life.
