Opening night roster is set after RFA signings

Description
I just don't see any other moves being made at this point. I think Stephenson will be signed, and moved to Hershey as a tweener. If we lose him to waivers, so be it.

The bottom six is pretty much solidified for the next three years, other than Leipsic. In the top six, the only "movable" player is Oshie, but even then the Caps will keep him. He'll likely be exposed in the expansion draft, but at this point, there's no reason to move anyone for cap reasons...unless Vrana is going to get more than what he's signed for here.

With Holtby's cap coming off the books next season, there should be enough money to extend Backstrom.

If we're looking at the roster today, I think the Caps end up protecting the following players in the expansion draft (7F/3D/1G)

Forwards:

Ovechkin
Backstrom
Vrana
Kuznetsov
Wilson
Eller
Panik/Hagelin

Defensemen:

Carlson
Kempny
Jensen
(Caps expose Orlov because they have a ton of LHD's in the prospect pool, and can likely replace Orlov's skill set - namely Alexeyev or Fehervary)

Goaltender:

Samsonov

I think there's a chance that he is. We don't have many replacements for defensemen on the right side. Kempny is super important to our defensive performance. There was a huge drop off in defensive metrics when he was out, and is probably a huge contributor to why we lost in the first round of the playoffs.

I absolutely love Orlov as a player, but when you look at the prospect pool at LHD in the Caps' system, there are high level prospects that are a year or two away from the NHL at the most. Alexeyev is trending well, and Fehervary is shooting up the depth chart. Pair that with having Kempny, Djoos, Siegenthaler, and even Johansen, there's a log jam.

I'd rather expose Jensen at this point, but he is cheap and we don't have any RHD in the system that are NHL-quality. The smart move would be to try and convince Seattle to take Oshie and keep all the top-four D-men.

I think that's what happens. Oshie would be there for multiple seasons, and could easily be their captain. I think GMBM learned from his mistakes at the Vegas expansion draft

Quick question. Since Ovechkin will be a free agent the summer of the expansion draft doesn't that mean there's no need to protect him?

I think in an ideal world, he'd be extended before that. I don't think the Caps will want to risk losing him in any fashion.

I could see a situation where the Caps and Ovechkin come to an extension agreement but hold signing it until after the draft. That way they could protect more players while still having an agreement in place.

In the 2017 expansion draft, the protection requirement applied to all players under contract that have played two or more years of professional hockey (i.e. NHL or AHL, either applies). With that in mind, the Caps are likely to have to protect Alexeyev at a minimum, assuming he plays enough games this year to qualify, which seems probable.

Yeah, I agree. I was looking at just if you were looking at the NHL roster today.

For sure, wasn’t trying to bust you - I was just reminded of this today and thought it was worth sharing.
