A "transition year" implies you're transitioning from one core to another, or at least transitioning new, young players in. In which case you definitely don't re-sign Stempniak, Liles, Kelly and Smith. You give guys like Vatrano, Connelly, Griffith, C. Miller, Morrow, Subban and maybe even Heinen, DeBrusk, Senyshyn, Zboril, Carlo or O'Gara guaranteed play time and you transition veterans like Chara and Seidenberg out of their regular play time. This may very well be a transition year but not with the roster you put together.

With that said, I love the Demers signing. Make that deal ten times out of ten.

The "transition core" is a year away. You will need some vets on a one year deal to bridge because no one in minors is ready. Griffith, C. Miller, Morrow, Subban, Heinen, DeBrusk, Senyshyn, Zboril, Carlo or O'Gara, are not ready. They can be brought up as needed in season to get some experience. There is no point overpaying for Okposo, Eriksson, etc. Stay the course and sign someone like Demers for a reasonable contract and resign Krug. Keep the money for next year and hope someone takes Seids off our hands.
