if you hate the trade...can deal with that...but whats so much to hate?
Not sure how CBJ fans value their players- so I threw this out there...if the Jackets really figure Harrington or Milano into their plans then I can see not liking this...otherwise, the money between Smith and Harrington is close, the Jackets get a prospect who should make the NHL, and they get a very serviceable Fast- who, if they choose not to resign will fetch a pick or 2 at the TDL.

Why would Columbus take on Cap space and get nothing in value in back...

Smith= shouldnt be in the NHL(So much cap space)
Fast= 20/30 point guy(can get that in free agency)(Or never trade for Naminsov)
Lingren: Back up at most

Harrington= 5/7 dman(and cbj is retaining money like what)
Milano= still prospect...

This trade makes no sense

The sense of this trade is that CBJ is "selling " off cap space while taking on roughly 200K over 3 years (between Smith and Harrington) for the return of a D prospect and a bottom 6 player whose value to any team- especially a playoff contender- goes beyond his on ice stats. As far as Milano- I put him in the deal figuring he's had difficulties sticking in NHL and his recent behavior issue-thinking maybe he needs a change of scenery....for sure, though- he still is a prospect- and with his pedigree if CBJ still has plans for him and/or havent given up on him- no problem with taking him out of the deal.

So in the end, this deal is about selling cap space for futures...CBJ has cap space, but the draft cupboard is barren the next few years....the Rangers need cap room- but have a few players, prospects, and picks they can move.....If you are simply not interested in this type of deal- that's fine...but if you like this type of deal but just don't like the pieces going or the return- then what might you suggest?

I just cant see CBJ or any team taking cap space for that little..

If teams were, you wouldnt have had to buy out Shatterkirk... A 1st rounder would need to be involved at the very least

The net cap space being bought here involving Smith is just under 800K for 2 years (considering taking back Harrington)...If Harrington is more of value to CBJ than a 7D- then obviously there is more value to be compensated for- in putting this trade together I referenced CapFriendlys depth chart- which lists Harrington as a healthy scratch (out of top 6). For 800K per- a 1st is a heavy ask...Car got a 1st to take on 6M.

In reality, the bulk of the cap space the Rangers gain in this trade is by moving Fast...but he is a player who is worth the cap hit- and going forward, he'll probably command a salary in excess of 2M per on his next contract. So if CBJ choose to do so- there will be a market for Fast at the TDL- probably a 3rd...maybe a 3rd and a 4th or 5th.

Car got a 1st for 1 year of 6 mil... youre asking for 2 years of smiths terrible contract and cbj giving a serviceable player and a prospect

The Smith contract would cost 2.175M per for 2 yrs...I tried to offset that by taking back Harrington @ 1.633 for 3 yrs...I managed to complicate it with the inclusion of the 250K ret and the inclusion of Milano...and the mention you make of Harrington's usefulness does put value into the deal coming back to the Rangers (as opposed to Smith going to CBJ- an obvious dump)...That all said: would you consider Harrington (nothing ret) for Smith (2.175 ret), Fast, a 2020 3rd, and a 2021 3rd?
Or if Harrington is seen as a contributor you wouldnt want to part with- would you consider a 2021 6th (or a prospect) in exchange for Smith (2.175M ret), Fast, a 2020 3rd and a 2020 5th?
