Description
Line combos for the upcoming season.

Tatar, Danault, Gallagher line stays together. This line also receives some powerplay time for a change.

Ryan Poehling makes the team out of training camp, pushing Domi to the wing. Poehling showed pretty solid chemistry with Weal in his 1 NHL game. All three players are smart playmakers, but Domi and Weal can also shoot the puck. This is my Danault lite line. Poehling = Danault, Weal = Tatar, Domi = Gallagher. There are obviously some differences, but on paper it works. This line will get the bulk of the powerplay time, with either Drouin & Weber or KK & Petry.

Drouin has to play on the third line, and somebody has to play on their off wing. I decided Drouin, since he has the hands and skill to be able to do that. Drouin can focus on the offense, while lehkonen will be the high guy for his shot and defense. KK centering this line, depending how much strength he puts on in the offseason this line could be very good.

4th line is all defensive specialists. Byron, Cousins, and Armia.

Thompson and Weise are the extras. Would rather see old vets sitting than Hudon, Peca, McCarron, etc.

Kulak and Petry stay together, they were elite possession wise to end the year. They will get the bulk of the 5 on 5 icetime.

Weber and Mete are also solid at 5 on 5, they will get tougher defensive matchups.

Chiarot and Folin form a defensive 3rd pair. Juulsen is a candidate for this spot but I think he starts in Laval to get some confidence after that injury.

Rielly is the extra, he can play on any pairing.

In the AHL:
Hudon - Varone - Barber form a line of proven AHL scorers with NHL experience.

Peca - Suzuki - McCarron is line 2. Hoping McCarron can be what Ratcliffe was for Suzuki. I still like McCarron.

Vejdemo - Evans - Belzile stick together, all teammates from last year.

The rest fill the 4th line, it is a shame Teasdale is injured.

Ouellet - Fluery carry on from last year.

Oloffson - Juulsen both recover from injuries together.

Leskinen and Brook probably play PP1 while getting adjusted to the AHL game.

Alzner scratched until somebody is called up. Not gonna sit any of the younger guys at his expense.

Primeau, Lindgren, McNiven compete for the starting gig, if Lindgren isn't claimed off waivers.

Definitely if he has a good camp, who sits if he make the team? Assuming Poehling also make it.

Given there's no injury and Poehling also makes the team :

Weal, Byron and Cousins will fight for the last roster spot. IMO, Byron if it happens, Byron should be traded for picks in 2020 home draft

Byron is more important to the team than you think. When he is hurt the habs aren't the same. I would rather trade Tatar personally, but I think it's a move that would have been done already if the habs were considering this.

I think Weal will have a spot in the lineup. I think he is the stop gap for Suzuki actually. Weal was on pace for ~50 pts playing for the habs last season. He also put up 100 pt seasons in junior like Suzuki. Sometimes there is an adjustment for players, I think there might be one for Suzuki.

Agree with both of you that Suzuki might have a shot and Poehling should make the team in october.
BUT: lets play them together in Laval for half a year
They get chemistry and (biggest point here) they don't need to be protected from Seattle in june.

They are already exempt from the expansion draft, no matter where they play next year.

If they are ready they are ready. The habs aren't gonna play them in the minors if they deserve to be on the team. Every point in the standings matter, look at last year.

How come they are exempt ??
If they play 40+ games this year they will be exposed if my understanding is right ?

See under CBA/ Expansion draft

Minimum Exposure Requirements
Teams must expose a minimum number of players that meet the following criteria for selection in the upcoming Expansion Draft:

Position
Forwards
under contract in 2020-21, AND played in 40 or more NHL games last season, OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons

That doesn't mean they are eligible for the draft, that means that the habs have to expose at least one player that meets those requirements.

Only players that have played 3 pro seasons (NHL or AHL) have to be protected. Therefore Kotkaniemi will have to be protected, Suzuki and Poehling will not (1 NHL game last year does not count). Mete, Fluery, and Juulsen need to be protected, Brook does not. Lindgren and McNiven need to be protected, Primeau does not. Etc.
