The biggest reason Stamkos signed, is because the base salary is so low. He only pays income tax based on the games he plays in states other than Texas, Florida and Tennessee. Paying tax over the 1m salary, results in far less than if the salary was the same as the cap hit. The signing bonus is not subject to state income tax and that is where it makes the difference.
