I think Liljegren is on opening roster for LTIR cap hit purposes only. I think the cap hit works like this:
My cap hit on this team is $82,858,810 but Marchment since he did not play in NHL last year has zero cap hit on opening day the and injured in camp has zero cap hit for opening day and also under the same camp injury Kossila's prorated cap hit is 97,850 based on the number of days on a NHL lineup last year.
That makes the cap hit on opening day 82,858,810 - 767,500 - 700,000 + 97,850 = 81,489,160 with 10,840 unused. The objective with the opening day roster is to get as close to the cap as possible so it maximizes the LTIR available.
Therefore the leafs max cap right now including the LTIR is 81,489,160 + 5,300,000 + 5,250,000 + 2,250,000 +863,333 = $95,152,493. They will not be able to use the $10,840.
Let me know if I am mistaken here but I believe this is how the LTIR works
So back to Liljegren on opening day roster in my opinion is just to maximize the LTIR available and the next day he is going to be sent down to the Marlies and they may or may not recall another player. They may try him a game or two to see how he does but I think he will spend most of the year with the Marlies.
Marchment and Kossila will be waived/sent to the Marlies as soon as they are healthy.
In theory yes you are right. Somehow Pridham always gets every cent. I believe it has to do with sending the opening night roster while already using ltir. Will have to wait and see what Pridham does. I believe that Lilly was also put in the roster so his PB won’t count. Think they play both him and sandin for 9 games and then make a decision on which will stay.
