Description

Assumption:
The cap doesn't rise this summer due to the lost HRR and there won't be any free buyouts. Teams will have to work hard to make the money work.

Further explanation to the WSH trade:
WSH is looking to make space to sthrengthen their defense via FA and therefore trade a replacable player in Panik. They also decide to move on from Holtby and go with Samsonov as their starter.

Devils get him right before his contract expires and are able to talk to him early (like PHI and Hayes last summer). Holby's goal is to sign longterm with a contender but that market is not there for him in 2020 because no contender has the money and he's coming off a down season. Devils take advantage of his situation and agree to a one year deal that makes him an UFA in 2021 where there should be a strong market for him again since Seattle joins the league and the cap should finally go up with the new american TV deal.

I know the Devils are far off from a realistic landing spot for Holtby but the way things could go this summer this could be a favorable solution for both the player and the team.
