Created by: Richard88
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 7, 2020
Published: May 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Please note that I'm not a Toronto fan, but I am trying to see how Toronto could fit Pietrangelo in without moving Marner. I'd appreciate comments relating to contract and trade values.

An AGM for Colorado based on the same trade is in this link: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1726770

TOR
  1. Grubauer, Philipp
  2. Jost, Tyson [RFA Rights]
  3. Kaut, Martin
  4. Timmins, Conor
  5. 2020 1st round pick (COL)
  6. 2021 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Timmins and Kaut are NHL ready with top 4D/top 6 upside and provide depth on ELC's. Jost is a cost-effective 3C. Toronto also gets a 1st and 2nd.

Goalie swap saves $1.7m in cap. Both goalies are UFA's in 2021 and have very similar stats the last 2 years:

Grubauer (28):
18/19: 37GP, 2.64gaa, 0.917sv%
---- PO: 12GP, 2.29gaa, 0.925sv%
19/20: 36GP, 2.63gaa, 0.916sv%

Anderson (30):
18/19: 60GP, 2.77 gaa, 0.917 sv%
---- PO: 7 GP, 2.75gaa, 0.922 sv%
19/20: 52 GP, 2.85 gaa, 0.909 sv%
COL
  1. Andersen, Frederik
  2. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
Moving Nylander allows Toronto to sign Pietrangelo and keep Marner.
2.
TOR
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (STL)
  2. 2020 4th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Not sure what value he holds. The point is that his cap hit gets moved for futures.
MTL
  1. Dermott, Travis [RFA Rights]
3.
TOR
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (FLA)
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Not sure what exact value Johnsson holds, but as a 0.5ppg winger coming off a knee surgery, and in a buyers market (due to the flat cap) I figure that a 2nd + 3rd is reasonable.
FLA
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
Additional Details:
Florida get a middle 6 winger to replace Dadonov/Hoffman.

Am I the only one that’s going to point out that Andersen had those numbers while almost playing twice the amount of games Grubauer, is hold onto him until his contract is up, thank you very much

Grubauer played 49 games in total in 18/19, and 36 this season.
Andersen played 67 games in total in 18/19, and 52 this season.

The difference isn't dramatic, especially when you consider that Grubauer was injured for parts on this season. It's also worth noting that Grubauer has had Varlamov and Francouz as a goalie partner so there hasn't been a reason to lean more on him, unlike the situation in Toronto where the backup is significantly worse than Andersen.

Also, if you want to nitpick we can look at their respective playoff performances, where Grubauer has Andersen beaten in GAA and sv%, and also took his team beyond the first round - something Andersen didn't.

Grubauer (28):
18/19: 37GP, 2.64gaa, 0.917sv%
---- PO: 12GP, 2.29gaa, 0.925sv%
19/20: 36GP, 2.63gaa, 0.916sv%

Anderson (30):
18/19: 60GP, 2.77 gaa, 0.917 sv%
---- PO: 7 GP, 2.75gaa, 0.922 sv%
19/20: 52 GP, 2.85 gaa, 0.909 sv%

That all said, I think Andersen is probably the slightly better goalie which is why I wouldn't mind trading for him if it's necessary to save Toronto some dollars to enable the Nylander trade to happen. Not a big issue though, I'd gladly just leave Grubauer out of the trade too if it can work that way.
