Keep it Simple Hall-elujah

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For the most part, this team goes unchanged. Bring in Hall, move out Zadorov.

For Hall, this deal is on the low end for $. Maybe he takes a discount to be on a contender - COL is probably one of a few that could currently fit him in. I think a 3 year deal makes a lot of sense for him though. It would give him chances at the cup and time to pad his stats with MacK before getting his final big contract at 31 years old. That would also hopefully line up with increased cap.

If not Hall, I'd guess Colorado could go after Namestnikov/Taffoli/Dadonov/Hoffman or pick someone else up in a trade (Killorn, ?).

For 2021-2022, Cole/Calvert/Bellemare would be replaced by ELCs (Byram/Newhook/Bowers/Kaut). Donskoi might also need to be traded to free up money for Makar/Grub/Landy.

That's a lot of money to lock up Hall when you've got Makar and Landy to sign next year.

They can spend around 6.5m in ufa with a flat cap and still afford makar and Landy extensions. So 8.5m will pinch out nichushkin and make the goalie situation even more difficult. Is doable for hall but it creates a squeeze a year to soon

Yeah, it's tight but doable. I think Donskoi would get moved before Nichushkin though. My thought was that if Sakic was willing to make pushes for Panarin last year, I don't know why he wouldn't want to go for Hall at cheaper.

I really don't know how free agency is going to play out with the flat cap that teams have not been planning for over the past few years.

He did pitch for Panarin, but if he landed him he wouldnt have signed Donskoi, Wilson, maybe doestn do the Kadri trade bc that was completed after Panarin signed with the Rangers.

Avs will lose money in the expansion draft, someone like Compher, Donskoi, or Graves could be picked which isnt the end of the world when you have Kaut Newhook Timmins and Byram on ELCs to slide into their place.

Real question is in net. They wont extend Grubi this offseason, will let that play out letting him play on the last year of his deal. Eventually they will have spend some money on a goalie, who that is no clue so need to ensure they have a little cap space to do that

I think Zadorov gets you slightly better than a 2nd + 5th.
I feel like with the cap being flat the next 2 years, 8.25mil is pushing the upper limit of value on Hall.

I see Zadorov squeezed out for sure and if COL brings in a Hall/Namestnikov/Hoffman etc, they may need to move out one of Compher/Jost/Donskoi (depending on the $ of the guy they bring in)

Yeah, thats a tough one. I do see COL bringing back Grubauer personally.
Looking at UFA goalies that offseason, you are looking at F. Andersen, Binnington, J Allen, maybe Mrazek

Yeah I think the same thing as Panarin would happen here. If you don't get Hall, you pick up a second line winger. If we do get Hall, you backpedal a bit and get rid of someone you wouldn't have originally signed (Donskoi, after this year). + like you mentioned, drop some more $ in the expansion draft.

Agreed on letting Grubauer play out the year before re-signing. Unless something drastic happens, I don't see him or Landeskog getting more than $1-2M raises each. Makar is more of the wildcard for me - he could be anywhere in $6-9M imo. Does he end up having a monster year and get a longer big contract, or does he regress/plateau at all and end up getting a 3-yr bridge deal like Werenski (with more $)?

just made a roster to show how the 6.5m UFA this offseason is really the magic number in a flat cap. Anymore and the squeeze actually starts

Just made this to show how a 6.5m offseason UFA this year aligns post Makar and Landy in a flat cap. If there is a bump bc of expansion etc then they are more then safe
