You're going to try to trade a cap-dump and a 7th round pick for a former first overall? He may not have proved much at this point, but he's still worth something to Edmonton. Plus the fact you'd still have to pay them to take on five more years of Marc Staal, even with salary retained. In this case, they'd be stuck with a low-end defenseman at $4.2M per season who would probably end up being a bottom pairing guy for them, since Klefbom, Larsson, Nurse, Sekera, and maybe even Davidson would most likely be ahead of him on the depth chart at the very least. You don't typically have the other team reward you for taking your bad contracts, and in this case, I'd imagine Edmonton declines immediately.
