Habs 2020-2021 Retool

Created by: ML16
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2020
Published: Aug. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Problem #1 : G2
- Solution : Sign Crawford @ 4.5M (Yes, it means 15M in goaltending, however is’t not an issue short term since our top 3 centers’s salary combined for a meager 5 or 6 M. (It is essentially a deluxe stop-gap to let Primeau seasoned a bit.)

Problem #2 : Size on the wings
- Solution : Comtois for Brook + pick. ANA lacks RD prospect and the pick helps with the post-Getzlaf era. Greenway coming in from MIN in the Domi/Brodin tradeoff.

Problem #3 : Reliable top 4 LD
- Solution : Brodin / Greenway from MIN for Domi and Mete (LD) + Lindgren (G). Domi rejuvenates MIN’s center line, Mete a cost-controled replacement on LD And Lindgren, a local talent, for a potential back-up position. The picks aim to compensate, but could be reviewed if Brodin’s status beyond 2021 is cleared up. Again, essentially a stop gap to buy time for Romanov, but if meshes well with the team and his demands are reasonable, we could try to keep him as the 3rd protected D in the expansion draft.

Problem #4 : Offensive wizardy on the PP
- Solution : Huberdeau from FLA, however I know it’s a long shot. But Tatar as a short-term replacement, Struble as a much needed stud prospect on defense + 1st ans 2nd and 4th round picks this year, maybe FLA could be inticed to take the bait, or as least send a counter-proposal. (We could then maybe throw Caulfield In the mix?)

Drouin was on the 1st line with Susuki in the playoffs
They both led the team with 7 points in 10 GP

15M between the pipes seems indeed unreasonable, but it is for two years only, while Primeau develops in the AHL and our top-3 centers’ salary combine for less than 6 M. Plus we need an unprotected G for the expansion draft. I don’t see how the MIN trade is unrealistic; the pick swap is there because Brodin is not signed beyond 2021. As for Huberdeau, maybe I reached a little by not including Caufield in the mix, but would be open to it in FLA’s counter-offer... As for Comtois, I like his potential and can understand why the Ducks wouldn’t move him, but I at least hope they make adequate room for him next year!

Finally, in regards to the lines I built, I followed players’ chemistry and complementarity, hence the reason why Armia, Comtois and Greenway are spread out to give size on each of their lines. The only exception is the pure offensive line of Suzuki and the Jonathans. I wouldn’t say that Kotkaniemi’s line is the second and Danault’s third, more like 2A and 2B, with their ice-time managed depending on the opponent and the score. I also put Kotkaniemi on the first PP line (replacing Huberdeau, who takes point with his awesome playmaking) so that Danault can center the second wave, keeping everyone happy!
