Far fetched but this team could win the cup

Created by: mistagat
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2020
Published: Sep. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My original goal was to see if it would be possible to fit Hall and Pietrangelo as well as trade Nylander for a cost effective D-man. I managed to fit them all in plus some. It took a lot of trades and teams retaining a bunch of salary. The Ducks retain a ton of salary in the Nylander trade, but I thought I added enough assets to make it worth their while. They’ll be rebuilding for the next few years, so the players and picks will help them out.

It’s a lot of moves and totally unrealistic that any GM could pull all this off in one offseason, but I feel like the trades are pretty even.

What do you guys think?

I also considered trading the rights for Dermott and signing Radko Gudas instead, slotting him RD3 and moving Sandin back over to LD3. Not sure if you could get Gudas for 1.5 - 2 mil, but if you could, that might be the better option, especially come playoffs.

I don't hate that ducks trade. I think we'd probably want Holl in that trade to replace Manson as a RHD. Also I think I'd rather take the cap hits of Holl or maybe even AJ rather than retain on guys. What's more valuable Liljegren or the EDM 1st???

I would say that Liljegren is more valuable right now. Edmonton will most likely make the playoffs next year and the draft lottery probably won’t be the same as this year, so their pick will be 16+ most likely 20-30. Also, I don’t believe next years draft will be as deep as this years, so picking in that range you don’t even know for sure if you are getting a bonafide NHL player.

Liljegren hasn’t turned into what he was touted to be, but I’m not willing to give up on him yet. He’s still very young and still getting a grasp on his 200 foot game. I could possibly see him being a top 4 D-man at some point if he puts it all together.
