NYR-CAR Connection Again

Created by: valiqs
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 7, 2020
Published: Sep. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NYR has a big need at the C position along with logjams among the G and LW positions. A gap 2/3C with leadership/defensive roles could help them a lot so long as the price is right. CAR needs a solution at the G position, a solution to a log jam at C, and a small amount of cap relief for young players. These teams have matched up on paper in the past and seem to do so again.

This trade does NOT solve NYR's need at RHD. That need is unsolvable without moving the Hank/MStaal/Smith contracts (which are not movable without undue cost).

CAR can solve their 3C needs by moving Necas to 3C, resigning Foegele at 3LW and Williams at 3RW. Martinook/Geekie/McGinn becomes their 4th line. NYR would much rather have Trocheck than Staal at C, but there is NO way that CAR should move him.

Trades
NYR
  1. Staal, Jordan ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
NYR has a goalie logjam and need a 2/3C with leadership capability at a low price. They can absorb some salary due to buyouts and the Hank/Smith/Staal Ks expiring soon.
CAR
  1. Georgiev, Alexandar [RFA Rights]
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
CAR needs a better net solution and a bit of cap space. NYR meets their needs and gives them a pick for some extra retained salary.

Nope, they already tried this experiment with Eric Staal and it backfired. The Rangers want younger and cheaper not old and expensive

I appreciate the feedback. I would like to point out that Eric Staal had only 20 games with NYR and was still +1 overall with them with a career resurgence the next 2-3 seasons in MIN. It doesn't seem like Eric Staal was the issue there, more that he wasn't a fit in the NYR system 3/4th the way through the season.

This is not a deadline addition, but an new season pickup. It's meant to change their defensive schemes from the middle of the ice out. J Staal is outstanding on faceoffs, defensively, and can generate offense when needed. NYR needs forwards that can play some defense. This seems like a good match up.

Won't happen because Staal is 31 yrs old and Strome is 27, he had chemistry with bread man and who knows what will happen with staal. And staal is making 6 mill for the next 4 yrs why would the Rangers even go there?

This move has retained money. Staal moves to NYR for 3.5 mil over 3 years, NYR resigns Strome at 4 mil. So you add a piece and keep the Strome/Panarin chemistry you mentioned while staying under the cap.
Also, NYR has the youngest team in the league. They can add a 31 year old player who drastically improves them defensively without much issue.

I wouldn’t mind this but would prob make the 3rd either a late pick like a 5th or 6th bc Georgiev is younger and it’s an in division trade
