Barely under the cap with 22 man roster

Created by: Misterrainer
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 9, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We need to trade Andreas Johnsson for picks/prospects without taking any salary back. If we do that and run a 22 man roster, we are just barely under the cap. Either this or we play the LTIR game again like we did last year with Clarkson & Horton! I think MIkheyev and Dermott are underpaid at $1.1m too but we have no more space.

I would say that there is a 0% chance that Mik signs for 2 x 1.1M. And what is the plan for Dermott? Just sit on the third for his whole career? Should be moved for a chance to prove himself.

That would be 1 year deals for Mikheyev and Dermott.

Not too many players on LTIR. Johnsson to Ottawa for Gaborik???

Yeah, I was trying to see what type of deals we'd have to sign with Mikheyev and Dermott to stay under the cap. I can see them offering Dermott a 1 year deal because he's an RFA without arbitration rights and can't really do anything short of sitting out the season... which would be a foolish decision on his part. The team will have to promise him (and MIkheyev) decent raises next year once Andersen, Simmonds, Hyman and Spezza come off the books.

No, the expectation is that Johnsson is traded somewhere with no money coming back; I didn't want to create a confusing trade so I just stashed him on LTIR for the purposes of seeing what the roster would look like. I can see the Leafs offering teams draft picks in order to take on LTIR contracts that we can use to go over the cap. I think Kesler is one of them and lord knows Eugene Melnyk would love for someone to save him money by taking Gaborik off his hands (even though the majority of that contract is covered by insurance).

I don't see how they could possibly do that. There will undoubtedly be even less money next summer. Spezza's replacement cannot cost less. Hyman will be owed a raise, and if the team lets him go then become even softer. The goalie market has shown that it will be near impossible to get a half-decent Freddie replacement for much less.

But even if they could, I don't see why either should accept 1.1M. Dermott will be 24 by the time the next season starts. He has been on the third pairing for 3 seasons with no opportunity for advancement (and the Leafs' will have to expose him in the expansion draft). Mikheyev turns 26 tomorrow. These are his prime earning years. The team also has Sandin who they should either play or trade.
