First, trading Colin Miller. Miller is a solid bottom pairing defenseman, but in Buffalo his defensive play dropped a lot. It's not crazy at all to think he'd bounce back here, but think since he has a big cap hit, didn't have any real chemistry with anyone, it's not a bad idea to move on. Sabres have to move on from one of Miller, Risto, and Montour right? Ironic that I chose probably the best defensively one but don't Risto is getting traded right now for anything, and Montour can play left side and seems like Krueger has some faith in him. I think Anahiem would love this deal, solid right handed choice, cap is a little high but it's only a 3rd, will add a lot of competition to their improving blueline.
Second, trading McCabe. He seems to love to show up with a huge hit, great play, get everyone excited for the first 10 games and then fall off the map. I think Sabres just need a change, and think moving on from his a good step. He had pretty good defensive analytics, but has little offensive upside, and don't think he pairs well.
Third, trading for Cernak. This one is much more of a dream, think he's the perfect defenseman to provide stability to the blueline, and he's super young. Don't know if Tampa will be able to sign him unless he takes less to stay there, got to sign a lot right now. Samuelsson is a prospect who is fairly like Cernak, could be ready in a couple years and fill a nice bottom pairing role being physical and solid defensively. 2nd adds some value, might be in the sabres favor but

Fourth, cap dump to Detroit. 2 round upgrade may not be enough, idk not a crazy cap on him but.
Fifth, I think it's a complete dream getting Pilut back, but maybe he sees Hall come in, gets offered a top 4 role and bites? Hopefully, but probably not.
Lineup decisions, Hall not with Eichel. Think they play too much alike, both like the puck and want to take center ice, both like to control the game. I think they'd still be great together, but feel Hall helps the 2nd line so much. I also think Skinner and Staal should be on different lines both score goals in similar ways, both around the net banging home pucks. Olofsson is definitely an outside shooter, and think putting him back on his off wing will help him develop 5 on 5, especially with Hall and Staal. Also Skinner needs to bounce back, and think best chance is going with what worked for him, Jack and Sam, don't think either of those two would complain about that either.
Powerplay was confusing, think Staal has to be PP1. So good at banging pucks in from the front of the net, plus good on faceoffs, works well. Hall/Olofsson on their offwing, my guess would be hall but. Sorry for writing too much me fault
If that's the cost for Cernak, both in terms of cap dollars and in terms of actual trade value, the Leafs would surely present a better trade offer than that, as would many other teams in the league.
I think Colin Miller is the perfect partner for Dahlin. Joki probably isn't ready for top pairing minutes yet and both Risto and Montour are black holes defensively and both of them as partners would be a disaster. I think every Sabres fan would agree with that. Also, where is everyone getting this idea that Montour can play on his left? He is one of the worst analytic defensemen in the league, him or Risto need to be traded. Also I really don't think Miller is much of an upgrade over Hutton. Getting Pilut back would solve a big problem. Otherwise, I like the lines

Looking back I agree, I'm guessing it would cost more. Probably more of a pipe dream than an actuality

I disagree, ngl I think Jokiharju was one of our best defenseman last year and can take top end 5 on 5 minutes, especially if he takes a step this year. I think though ideally you don't wanna pair two 20 year old defenseman together, Jokiharju suits Dahlin so well. He's super solid defensively, plus can keep up with Dahlin's mobility. I think Dahlin - Miller can be a great D pairing, but I don't think it was last year. Krueger in his media interview after signing Montour said he likes his versatility and that he has the ability to play on the left side. Miller has been a consistent backup, plus could probably help teach Ullmark a lot. But yeah I think everyone agrees we need Pilut
