Planning For The Future

Created by: Calwin_Mars
Team: 2017-18 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 24, 2016
Published: Oct. 24, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming no one from the Kings get picked up by Las Vegas, the Kings will not see much change to their team. However, there are a few things different in this team

1. Our bottom pair defensemen - It's apparent that Matt Greene is past it as a viable NHL option. Tom Gilbert is a stop gap and will not be back next year. Should Paul LaDue progress as expected, it'd be a breath of fresh air to see a bottom pair of Gravel and LaDue, with Forbort serving as the 7D. (instead of using retreads like the Scuderis of the world). We would get more mobility from our blueliners, and that would help our aging front line quite a bit.

2. Extension comparisons for Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli
For Pearson, I see him getting something near to what Rickard Rakell got. ($3.8 million AAV), If his hot start turns into a 50 point season, he'll probably get upwards of $4 million.

For Toffoli, another 30 goal season and some improvement as a two-way player would net him a contract like Jaden Schwartz's ($5.35 million AAV). I do see Toffoli getting slightly more.

3. Backup goalie
I would want a fringe NHL starter like what we had in Jhonas Enroth in 2015-16 as our backup. Since we do have some additional cap space from buying out Matt Greene and trading away Kyle Clifford, I hope we can net a netminder out of the following list:
a. Thomas Greiss
b. Chad Johnson
c. Jhonas Enroth reunion
d. Al Montoya
With Quick getting up there in age, it would be best if the Kings had a goalie tandem. It would take some workload off Quick, reducing injury risks and fatigue.

However, fans should be rooting that Las Vegas takes either Gaborik or Brown from us. It would help the team immensely salary cap wise, as Doughty and McNabb would need new deals very soon

Would Las Vegas not take McNabb? They do have to take someone! I could see them even snagging one of LA's good depth forwards

I like a lot of what you said, but Las Vegas has to take one of LA's player. Of course Brown or Gaborik would be great, But McNabb, Clifford seem like a better bet for now.
I'm hoping LaDue will get some time up there, he proved he can skate and think fast enough to get a look at. And Forbort actually looked decent those last games when he didn't have to account for Greene's sluggish pace. Don't count him out (or maybe trade bait)

It'll depend on which option Dean and Darryl take. A team can protect one goalie, three blueliners and seven forwards. Then one of Alec Martinez or Brayden McNabb will be picked. I do see the Kings taking option B, that is they will protect one goalie and eight skaters. The eight skaters will include all 4 of Drew, Muzzin, Alec and McNabb. They will also protect Kopitar, Carter, Pearson and Toffoli. This exposes Brown, Gaborik, Lewis, Clifford, Nolan, Andreoff, Forbort, Gravel, Dowd, Shore, Kempe, Mersch. (First and second year pros exempted, but playing in the AHL counts as a 'pro')

Las Vegas might pick Brown or Gaborik depending on the style of team they want to be, and their sizable contracts allows Las Vegas to hit the cap floor. If the cap floor is not an issue, I do see them taking either Adrian Kempe (skilled LW with 2nd line potential) or one of the Nick's (Shore or Dowd). We'll have to wait and see

A team can protect one goalie, three blueliners and seven forwards or one goalie and eight skaters. McNabb will probably be protected under option B (and the Kings probably don't have many forwards they should want to protect other than Kopitar, Tanner, Carter and Toffoli, so losing Brown, Gaborik or a depth forward will probably be the case.

A lot of NHL scouts say that Paul LaDue is very close to being NHL ready, so it'd be interesting to see how soon he'll be called up. I also think should the KIngs call up Gravel and LaDue, our pairings will be all split up. We'd see something like this

Gravel-Doughty
Muzzin-McNabb
Martinez-LaDue

I'm not knocking Forbort, and he could definitely win a job on the bottom pair.
