I may be completely wrong here but do you have to carry 23 on the first day of the season? I seem to recall the Flames having to have Valimaki on their opening day roster but immediately sent him to LTIR. Was that only because of LTIR or was that a compliance thing?

I believe that is an LTIR thing. Teams don't have to have 23 players on their roster, they can carry 20 if they want, but 23 is the max.

That is exactly how I would set my lineups at forward. With Zero fear of any team claiming weal off waivers (it would actually benefit the Habs if someone did) they can send him down and still have enough room to call up either Peohling or Romanov at any time
