This year: Unload all expiring contracts at the dealine for as many draft picks as possible. Don't trade the sedins yet. Eriksson trade is one of the few ways to get good players like Pastrnak. But canucks have to give up the big defenseman Tryamkin to get a scorer.
If you want to trade the sedins, it'd probably be better to do so in the final year of their contract, when retained salary can be maxed out to squeeze more picks and players out of the trade partner. Especially since they "have" to trade them as a package. At 14 million, no one could possibly do that deal. But at 7 million (retained max salary for the duo), a trade is manageable.
Honestly, make the roster young and bad this year and get some top picks Leafs-style.
Chances are: Desjardins gets canned sooner rather than later, even though the awfulness of this team isn't his fault. Benning *should* be fired eventually for actually thinking this was a playoff team this year.
