The Flames aren't going to sign Bowey just to expose Kylington to waivers. Also the Flames have Nesterov, Valimaki, Kylington and possibly Mackey that can play RD.

How good is Mackey?

I've never seen him play, but by all accounts I've heard of him from the time he was signed through to him practicing with the team at the start of the return to play, at worst he'll be fighting for that #6 spot with Kylington & Nesterov and be the first recall.

He has solid college stats but likely won’t be NHL ready for a bit. AHL bound. I think taking a shot at Bowey would be worth it.

Even if Mackey is AHL bound, Kylington had never played LD before coming to North America, Nesterov was playing RD in the KHL and Valimaki is currently playing RD in Finland. I would rather have Kyli9ngton and Nesterov as our 6/7 than Bowey.

Except we don't really need another body to demote. We have Mackey, Yelesin, Petrovic, Lerby and Poolman slated for the AHL already, As well as returning defensemen Zac Leslie and Rob Hamilton on AHL deals who were quite solid fir the Heat last season. Then we also have Noah King, Greg Moro and Koletrane Wilson signed to AHL deals too.

Frankly with our defensive depth, I don't see Bowey wanting to sign with the Flames anyways as in my estimation, he might not even get 1st pairing time in the AHL.
