Description
A re-ranking of the 2006 Draft based on Hockey Reference's Point Share methodology.

https://www.hockey-reference.com/about/point_shares.html

About 26 players from this draft are still active in the NHL, so these rankings will change in a couple of years time.

Rankings are based on overall Point Share with priority to players who've played less games. Point Share per Game is also considered.

The highest ranked NA Skater in this draft was defenseman Erik Johnson from the US National Team Development Program. Most draft analyses at the time considered him to be the first selection.
The highest ranked EU Skater in this draft was centre Nicklas Backstrom from Brynas IF.
The highest ranked NA Goaltender in this draft was Jonathan Bernier from the Lewiston Maineiacs.
The highest ranked EU Goaltender in this draft was Jhonas Enroth from Sodertalje SK.

Some facts:

Total NHL players: 91 (43%)
Total Season players (82 games or more): 56 (26%)
1000 Game players: 1 (0%) Phil Kessel is the only player to pass this mark. A 60 game season would see 4 more players potentially crossing 1000 games.
PPG Players: 1 (0.5%) Carl Sneep (PIT) played one game and recorded one assist. The next highest is Nicklas Backstrom with 0.97 PPG.
Total Games Played: 29035
Average Games Played: 136

Average Point Shares: 136
Median Point Shares: 6.1 (highest since the 1990 draft)

ROUND 1TEAMORIGINALPLAYERDETAILS
1Logo of the St. Louis Blues-(99.1 PS) (0.11 PS/G) The Chicago captain sits atop the draft table... at least for now. He's currently got the most impressive trophy cabinet from his class, and a couple more decent seasons may separate him from the pack.
2Logo of the Pittsburgh Penguins-(97.0) (0.10) Had the Penguins actually picked their rivals longtime centre, their quality down the middle would've been a lot more dynamic. Backstrom holds the highest PPG ratio in his class.
3Logo of the Chicago Blackhawks-(95.0) (0.09) Phil's career looks like it's winding down, but he's currently the highest goal scorer in this class. Never broke 40 goals but easily got to 30+, along with a decent amount of assists.
4Logo of the Washington Capitals-(92.1) (0.19) Washington would grab Varlamov later in his draft. He spent the majority of his career in Colorado, but didn't amass much postseason success. Still put up some great seasons and is likely heading into a backup role soon.
5Logo of the Boston Bruins-(87.6) (0.12) Over half of his PS value's come in the last four seasons, when he changed from an obnoxious pest into a first line talent. While Boston acquires him earlier in this list, he could be as high as first by the end of his career. Frightening.
6Logo of the Columbus Blue Jackets-(86.8) (0.10) The Flyers captain has been one of the standout players from this draft, even if he's dropped down the list in recent years.
7Logo of the New York Islanders-(77.8) (0.16) You might be a bit surprised he's up this high. Mason won the Calder in his first year in Columbus but never reached those heights until he was traded for spare parts to Philadelphia. Had a couple good seasons before flaming out completely.
8Logo of the Phoenix Coyotes-(63.1) (0.17) Wide cap between goaltenders here, but Reimers been a bit more formidable than the guy above him. Has spent a lot of his career fighting someone else for a starting job.
9Logo of the Minnesota Wild-(62.1) (0.17) Speaking of which, his trade to Toronto didn't spell confidence for the guy above him. Decent enough but didn't become the starter Toronto was looking for.
10Logo of the Florida Panthers-(57.3) (0.06) The big power forward rounds out the top 10 for this class. He was a force in his Boston years but the psychical play has taken a lot out of him.
11Logo of the Los Angeles Kings-(54.2) (0.07) An early career injury caused him to miss an entire season, and he's never lived up the potential of a first overall pick. No means a bust, Johnson remains the best defenseman and one of the better players of his class.
12Logo of the Atlanta Thrashers-(53.7) (0.06) The third Staal brother has had a reasonable career, which included a cup win and a captaincy in Carolina.
13Logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs-(52.6) (0.06) His future is uncertain, but Little has been an admirable asset to the Thrashers/Jets organization.
14Logo of the Vancouver Canucks-(49.1) (0.06) His best years were on Long Island, with a 60 point season and a near PPG season.
15Logo of the Tampa Bay Lightning-(48.6) (0.06) Decent performances in Columbus and New York, followed by a journeyman adventure around the NHL.
16Logo of the San Jose SharksLogo of the Montreal Canadiens(47.5) (0.05) The Blue Jackets captain has always been a decent player, and he sees himself jump in ranking on this list.
17Logo of the Los Angeles KingsLogo of the Edmonton Oilers
Jeff Petry (+28 )
(39.7) (0.06) While Petry doesn't have the games to be higher on this list (currently), his services in Edmonton and Montreal haven't warranted any complaints.
18Logo of the Colorado Avalanche-(39.3) (0.15) Only had one starter season with Washington, been mostly a backup.
19Logo of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim-(38.0) (0.05) Decent centre who has put up some 40 point seasons, but has never really been on many successful rosters.
20Logo of the Montreal CanadiensLogo of the San Jose Sharks(39.5) (0.05) Berglund was alright in St Louis, especially at the start of his career. Recently wasn't able to make the Buffalo team.
21Logo of the New York Rangers-(36.5) (0.04) He's still the best Czech out of this draft, boasted several 40 point seasons. Sees himself without a contract though, which could mean his NHL days are done.
22Logo of the Philadelphia Flyers-(35.5) (0.05) He did a lot better than his older brother, but peaked with a 60 point season before a long drop off. Was a decent asset in several trades.
23Logo of the Washington CapitalsLogo of the Nashville Predators(34.8) (0.05) The holder of the funniest draft photo was golden when he was one of the New York teams. He might be done after being bought out by the Coyotes off of an 11 point season.
24Logo of the Buffalo Sabres-(34.3) (0.05) A mainstay on the Jets. Even if you think he's a little overpriced, he's one of the best steals in his draft.
25Logo of the St. Louis BluesLogo of the New Jersey Devils(31.3) (0.05) An alright defenseman who was given a massive payday from the Flyers. Didn't exactly pan out.
26Logo of the Calgary Flames-(26.4) (0.14) He's been on a good number of teams. Played in a starter or 1B role in Buffalo and Calgary with mixed results. In an alternate universe, the Flames might've made him a mainstay, considering his only playoff appearance was with them.
27Logo of the Dallas Stars-(25.5) (0.04) A poor mans Stewart/Frolik. One good 30 goal season with the Leafs, and decided to get back at them by sucking cash out of Long Island.
28Logo of the Ottawa Senators-(24.0) (0.16) A long time ago he was a backup in Buffalo.
29Logo of the Phoenix CoyotesLogo of the Detroit Red Wings(21.3) (0.06) The superior "Jamie Mc" of the draft. Severable defenseman in Carolina but didn't click anywhere else and has been out of the league for 3 years.
30Logo of the New Jersey DevilsLogo of the Carolina Hurricanes(19.5) (0.03) This "Jamie Mc" lasted longer and played twice as many games. An average player at best.
