Cap wise, it works. It's giving up Skjei and his elc that makes this a no go. Although Tanev would be a perfect fit here...

We have like 4 different potentially good future goaltenders, not just Shestyorkin. Also giving up Sean Day could be close to the McDonagh for Gomez trade we did with Montreal, assuming he gets his act together (which he has in the minors recently).

Tanev is good and young. Day will be lucky to play in Ahl. Giving up Skjei is the problem.

You'd better be 100% sure that Tanev is worth this trade, because you'll have to pay him just under $4.5 million for the next three years. Also you have no idea how Day is going to turn out so saying he might not even make the AHL is just dumb. The only thing I agree with you on here is that trading Skjei is a bad idea.
