This trade solves 2 issues at once for the Pens. They get rid of Fleury, get an expansion eligible backup, and they get a depth defenseman who is nothing spectacular but he is at least an NHL caliber player which is more than can be said for Oleksy. Pittsburgh's serious lack of blue line depth is being exposed with Letang and Daley on the shelf. *Note, there is another version of this trade that involves Ryan Murphy but it also involves the Pens adding a significant piece*

Canes (I know I'm reaching here) decide that they want to add a goalie to try to catch up with the rest of the metro and the price tag on Bish is too high.
